Chapter 22 - The Lion's Broken Cane

Across town, in the quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac of Oakridge, the lights in my two-story craftsman house were completely dark.

Inside the nursery, Clara stood behind the heavy oak door, her hand wrapped around the textured grip of my 12-gauge Remington shotgun. Her breathing was entirely silent, drawn deep from her diaphragm the way I had trained her when the threats first started circling. Beside her, huddled under a blanket inside the reinforced linen closet, six-year-old Noah had his hand clamped gently over little Mason’s mouth.

"Stay still, baby," Noah whispered in a trembling voice, channeling every ounce of courage his older brother status demanded. "Daddy built this wall. Nobody gets through Daddy’s wall."

Downstairs, the back patio sliding door slid open with a soft, lubricated hiss.

A shadowy operative clad in dark tactical gear stepped into the kitchen, his suppressed pistol raised, infrared optics glowing faint green on his helmet. He moved with military precision toward the basement stairs where the utility junction lay—the exact location Arthur had instructed him to rig.

What Arthur Vance’s high-priced mercenaries didn’t know was that three years ago, during the foundation retrofit, I had re-routed the main gas line through an exterior armored conduit. The pipe under the stairs was a dummy line, filled not with natural gas, but pressurized industrial fire-suppression foam linked to a tripwire at the third step.

The intruder’s boot caught the monofilament wire.

A deafening pneumatic blast shook the lower floor as two hundred pounds of dense, suffocating chemical retardant exploded in his face, blinding his night-vision goggles and throwing him backward into the kitchen island. Before he could recover, before he could clear his sidearm, Clara was down the stairs like a phantom.

She didn't hesitate. The butt of the Remington caught the operative squarely across the temple with a sickening crack. The man collapsed like a marionette with cut strings.

Clara instantly dropped to one knee, snatched the operative’s encrypted tactical radio from his vest, and hit the override push-to-talk.

Back on the pier, the silence between Arthur and my father was broken by a sudden burst of static from the comms unit on Arthur’s lapel.

*"Daniel,"* Clara’s voice rang out through the speaker, steady, cold, and lethal. *"The rat in our basement is down. The boys are in the safe room. The gas line is sealed. Blow those bastards into the river."*

Arthur’s smug aristocratic sneer froze.

In that half-second of shock, my father lunged.
