Chapter 26 - The Basement of Horrors

David launched himself from the fourth step, tackling Julian from behind with suicidal momentum.

The combined weight of both men sent them tumbling down the final flight of stairs in a violent, bone-snapping crash. They slammed into the hardwood floor of the foyer, scattering splintered balusters and framed family portraits across the rug.

Maya spilled from Julian’s grip, rolling across the floor toward the open kitchen door, screaming for her mother.

"Run, Maya! Run!" David bellowed as he rolled over, planting his knees on Julian’s chest.

David didn't hesitate. He raised the silver knitting needle and drove it down with all his might toward Julian’s throat.

Julian’s hand caught David’s wrist inches from his jugular. The man’s grip was superhuman, a vice forged from years of hard labor and psychopathic resolve. Slowly, agonizingly, Julian began twisting David’s wrist backward, the tendons groaning under the pressure.

"You have our father’s weakness," Julian hissed between clenched teeth, his face inches from David’s. "He thought love was a shield. It’s a target."

Julian headbutted David with brutal force.

David’s skull rang like a struck anvil. He fell off the giant, sprawling onto his side, his vision swimming in static. Julian rose instantly, drawing a long-bladed combat knife from his tactical vest. He stepped toward David, blade reversed, ready to deliver the killing thrust.

*CRACK!*

A heavy marble vase shattered across the back of Julian’s skull.

Julian stumbled forward, blood pooling instantly beneath his thick brown hair. Standing behind him, swaying on trembling legs, was Leah. Her face was bruised, her shirt stained with blood, holding the jagged neck of the broken vase like a dagger.

"Get away from my husband," she snarled, her voice a ragged, feral growl.

Julian turned slowly, wiping a smear of crimson from the nape of his neck. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his scarred lips. "You’ve got fire, little bird. It’s going to make skinning you so much more satisfying."

He lunged for Leah.

"LEAH, DOWN!" David screamed.

From the front porch, the darkness was suddenly shattered by blinding red and blue strobe lights. Sirens howled like a pack of hunting wolves tearing down the gravel driveway.

*BANG! BANG! BANG!*

Three high-caliber rounds punched through the open front doorway, shredding the wooden trim an inch from Julian’s head.

"POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!" Detective Miller’s voice boomed through a megaphone from the front yard, backed by the thunderous slamming of cruiser doors and the clicking of tactical shotguns.

Julian froze. He assessed the tactical situation in a split second. Ten officers with rifles advancing on the front porch. The front was burned.

He didn't panic. He glanced down at David, then back at Leah.

"This isn't over," Julian whispered. "You have something that belongs to me, David. The key in your pocket? It doesn't open a box. It opens the old cellar on Blackwood Ridge. If you want your life back, bring it to me before midnight tomorrow. Or I come back... and I take her eyes while she sleeps."

With shocking agility for a man his size, Julian pivoted and sprinted down the hallway toward the back utility room. A heavy wooden cellar door slammed shut. The sound of a deadbolt sliding into place echoed through the walls.

"David!" Leah collapsed beside him, pulling Maya into her trembling arms. The little girl was sobbing uncontrollably, clutching her mother’s bloodied shirt.

The front door was kicked wide open by SWAT officers in full tactical gear, their weapon-mounted lights carving through the smoky haze of the foyer.

"Clear! Clear left! Medic needed in the foyer!"

Detective Miller stepped through the threshold, his service weapon drawn, his face pale as chalk as he took in the carnage. He knelt beside David, who was struggling to sit upright against the ruined wall.

"David... my God," Miller breathed. "Where is she? Where’s Evelyn?"

David slowly raised a trembling hand, pointing toward the dark stairwell.

"She’s upstairs," David wheezed, blood dripping from his chin onto his chest. "But Miller... she wasn't alone. She has another son."
