Chapter 24 - The Monster in the Ceiling

David whipped his head around.
The attic hatch above the nursery was wide open. Dangling from the dark rectangle in the ceiling was not a rope, but a pair of filthy, barefoot legs clad in the gray canvas trousers of a mental asylum uniform.
Evelyn dropped into the hallway like a spider, landing with a sickening thud of bone on wood.
She didn't look like a human being anymore. Her silver hair was sheared close to her scalp in uneven, bloody clumps. Her face was gaunt, cheeks hollowed out until her cheekbones looked like knives pushing through translucent parchment. But her eyes—wide, feverish, illuminated by a terrifying, unholy luminescence—were locked entirely on Maya.
"Give me the child," Evelyn hissed, her voice a wet, ragged rattle. In her right hand, she clutched a rusted bone saw, stolen from the maintenance facility. "You were always too weak, David. Too soft. You let this whore poison your bloodline. But the baby... the baby is pure. I will raise her in the sanctuary."
"Get back!" Leah screamed, stepping out from behind David, raising the shotgun with both arms despite the weight of the child pressed to her ribs. "Get away from my baby!"
"You dare?" Evelyn shrieked, her face twisting into a mask of pure demonic rage. "I gave him life! I built this family from the dirt! You are nothing but an incubator!"
Evelyn lunged forward, impossibly fast, defying the laws of age and physics.
*BANG!*
The deafening roar of Leah’s shotgun ripped through the narrow corridor. The blast shattered the plaster of the hallway wall, raining pulverized drywall and splintered wood in all directions. But Evelyn had anticipated the trigger pull; she dipped low, throwing her entire withered weight into Leah’s knees.
Both women crashed to the floor in a tangled heap of limbs and screams. Maya was thrown from Leah’s grip, skidding across the hardwood floor toward the edge of the stair landing, crying out in sheer terror.
"Maya!" David lunged for his daughter, but Evelyn’s hand shot out like a steel claw, nails digging deep into his calf, tearing flesh through his denim jeans.
David grunted, falling hard, his chin slamming against the banister. His gun skittered across the floor, sliding down two steps into the dark below.
Evelyn was on top of Leah in an instant, straddling her chest, the rusted bone saw raised high above her head. Her lips were peeled back over yellowed teeth, spitting flecks of bloody saliva into Leah’s face. "You took him from me! Now I take your face!"
"NO!" David roared.
Ignoring the searing agony in his leg, he scrambled forward, throwing his entire forearm around his mother’s throat from behind, hauling her backward with every ounce of strength he possessed. Evelyn bucked violently, thrashing with the unnatural, psychotic power of a woman entirely untethered from pain. She drove her elbow back into David’s ribs, cracking bone, but he refused to let go. He locked his hands together in a chokehold, his teeth bared, tears of primal fury streaming down his face.
"You should have stayed buried!" David screamed into her ear. "You are not a mother! You’re a disease!"
Evelyn clawed at his eyes, her fingernails raking bloody gouges across his cheeks. Through the carnage, she let out a choked, triumphant cackle.
"You think... I came alone, David?" she wheezed, her trachea collapsing under his grip. "Look... at the stairs... look at the door..."
Suddenly, the front door downstairs was kicked off its hinges with a thunderous crash that shook the foundations of the house.
Heavy, deliberate combat boots stepped into the foyer.
And a deep, baritone voice—a voice David had never heard before in his life—echoed up the staircase:
May you like
"Mother. Do you have the girl, or do I have to kill them both myself?"
