Chapter 2: The Interruption at the Altar

The impact sent a shockwave through the front of the sanctuary. Splintered white wood exploded into the air, raining down like confetti upon the immaculate floral arrangements.
Gasps erupted from the pews. Several women in the background pressed their gloved hands to their mouths in utter horror and disbelief, while men stood up from their seats, murmuring frantically among themselves. A funeral service in an American church was a sacred, inviolable social contract; breaking it in such a violent manner was unthinkable.
Before Chloe could wrench the axe free for a second strike, a figure leaped from the second row of pews.
It was Julian Vance, Eleanor’s twenty-five-year-old grandson. Dressed in a sharp, bespoke black tuxedo that fit his athletic frame perfectly, a crisp white rose boutonniere pinned neatly to his lapel, Julian sprinted down the aisle with long, furious strides. His face was twisted in a mask of outraged disbelief.
"What the hell are you doing?!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling as he lunged forward, grabbing the handle of the axe just as Chloe yanked it backward.
A violent tug-of-war ensued over the weapon. Chloe planted her sneakers firmly against the altar platform, her knuckles turning white as she fought to keep control of the tool. Her brown eyes flashed with pure defiance, glaring up at the young man who stood as a symbol of everything she was trying to tear down.
"Let go of it, you little lunatic!" Julian roared, wrenching the axe toward himself.
"Get away from me!" Chloe screamed back, her voice cracking with fierce emotion. "You don't know what they did! You don't know what’s inside there!"
"You're desecrating a memorial service! Security! Get her out of here!" Julian yelled over the rising uproar of the congregation. Several mourners in the back rows began shouting in panic, uncertain whether this was a coordinated attack or the psychotic break of a disturbed child.
In the front row, Eleanor Vance gripped the back of a wooden pew so tightly her knuckles turned white, her chest heaving as she watched the struggle. Despite her outward rage, a flicker of cold, calculating panic crossed her eyes—a realization that if the girl broke through that lid, decades of carefully constructed lies would crumble in seconds.
Chloe refused to yield. With a sudden burst of adrenaline, she twisted the axe handle downward, leveraging the blade against the splintered wood. The sound of tearing timber filled the air as a large section of the white painted lid cracked open, tearing away from the gold hinges with a sharp screech of metal.
The white roses atop the casket tumbled to the floor, petals scattering across the white marble steps.

"I told you!" Chloe panted, her face flushed red, tears of frustration streaming down her cheeks as she shoved Julian back with a surprising burst of strength. "What they buried wasn't the truth! That's why I had to do this!"
Julian stumbled backward, tripping slightly over the altar railing before catching his balance. He stared at the fractured casket, his chest heaving, his face pale under the church’s warm lights. The entire church had gone dead silent once more, every eye fixed on the gaping hole in the white wood, holding their collective breath as the unimaginable hung in the balance.
