Chapter 5 - The Empty Mansion

Tires screeched violently against the wet limestone as Mark Salgado’s Mercedes AMG drifted through the gated entrance of the River Oaks estate. He slammed the brakes, barely stopping before the front steps, leaving black rubber streaks across the immaculate driveway.

“Daniela!” he roared, slamming the car door so hard the glass rattled.

He didn't bother using his key. He shoved the front door open with his shoulder and stormed into the echoey foyer.

“Daniela! Get down here right now!”

Silence answered him.

The house was unnaturally still. The familiar scents of fresh lilies and expensive citrus room spray were gone, replaced by the faint, clinical odor of ozone and industrial sanitizers.

Mark took the curved marble staircase three steps at a time, sprinting down the grand upper hallway toward the master suite.

“If you locked this damn door, Daniela, I swear to God I will kick it off the hinges!” he screamed, lunging at the brass handle.

The door swung open effortlessly.

Mark stumbled inside—and froze.

The master bedroom was completely stripped.

Daniela’s vanity was bare. Her perfumes, her jewelry, her hairbrushes—gone. The walk-in closet, once filled with her clothes, was half-empty; only the cheap, modest dresses she had owned before the wedding remained hanging on wire hangers. Every piece of designer clothing Mark had bought to parade her around his country club friends had been pulled from the racks and tossed haphazardly into a pile on the floor.

Panic, cold and sharp as an icicle, stabbed into Mark’s gut.

He sprinted back down the hall into his private study. He ripped the oil painting off the wall and grabbed the heavy steel door of his floor safe.

The safe door was wide open.

Inside, the velvet compartments were empty.

The Delaware shell corporation files—gone.

The fraudulent promissory notes—gone.

The seven-million-dollar life insurance policy—gone.

Even the emergency offshore bearer bonds he kept hidden beneath the false bottom were completely missing. In their place sat a single, pristine white card embossed with a gold emblem: the interlocking double-H logo of *Herrera Industrial Group*.

Mark’s knees gave out. He collapsed onto his hands and knees against the cold hardwood, staring at the card with dilated, horrified pupils.

“How… how did she find the combination?” he gasped to the empty room. “How could that illiterate mechanic’s daughter know…?”

His phone began to vibrate violently against the floorboards. It was his mother.

Mark answered with trembling fingers, pressing the phone to his ear. “M-Mom… she’s gone. She took everything. The files, the bonds, the safe is empty—”

“Shut up and listen to me!” Beatrice shrieked through the line. Her voice sounded strained, wild, on the verge of total madness. “The Chairman of Herrera Industrial Group just contacted our corporate counsel!”

Mark snapped his head up. “What? The Chairman?”

“Yes! They’ve agreed to an emergency buyout summit!” Beatrice breathed heavily, a desperate, hysterical hope rising in her voice. “Their Chief Legal Officer, Marcus Navarro, just issued an official summons. They are holding an extraordinary creditors' meeting at the Herrera Tower executive penthouse at two o’clock this afternoon!”

Mark scrambled to his feet, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead. “A buyout? They want to negotiate?”

“Of course they want to negotiate!” Beatrice barked, her arrogant composure momentarily returning. “Herrera Industrial doesn't want their supply chain shut down any more than we do! They must have realized that our transport contracts are critical to their coastal refineries! They’re using this pressure tactic to force us into selling thirty percent of our equity at a discount!”

Mark let out a shaky breath, a sickening, pathetic laugh bubbling up in his chest. “God… God, I thought we were dead. It’s just corporate hardball.”

“Listen to me carefully, Mark,” Beatrice commanded coldly. “Put on your best bespoke suit. Come pick me up in the Maybach. We are going to walk into that boardroom with our heads held high. We will act outraged by this unwarranted audit. We will threaten counter-litigation for breach of contract, and then we will magnanimously agree to a restructuring partnership!”

“What about Daniela?” Mark asked, looking at the empty safe. “She has our offshore files, Mom! If she goes to the police—”

“With what money?” Beatrice sneered dismissively. “With what lawyers? Her mother lives in a rundown bungalow in Magnolia Park! Daniela is probably crying on her mother’s cheap floral sofa right now, eating stale soup! By the time she works up the courage to find a legal aid clinic, we will have signed an immunity and indemnification agreement with Herrera Industrial! Their billion-dollar legal team will swallow her whole!”

Mark looked at the gold-embossed card on the floor.

He kicked it beneath his desk, straightened his tie, and smiled a dark, twisted smile.

“You’re right, Mom. Daniela is a nobody. She always was.”

May you like

He walked out of the room, completely unaware that he had just willingly placed his head directly onto the executioner's chopping block.
