Chapter 7 - DANIEL’S MONEY

Daniel did not run.

That helped.

He sat down.

“I can explain.”

Charlotte almost laughed.

“Everyone says that right before explaining something terrible.”

His payment was real.

$180,000.

Daniel admitted it.

But not as hush money.

Not exactly.

His father’s cancer treatment cost more than insurance covered.

Margaret offered to pay the medical debt.

Condition:

Daniel would sign a confidentiality agreement concerning anything he witnessed during Charlotte’s scandal.

Daniel accepted.

“Did you understand why she was paying?”

“Yes.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“You sold your silence.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

Again.

That mattered.

“My father lived another fourteen months.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I would probably make the same choice again if the only options were his treatment or protecting someone I barely knew.”

Charlotte absorbed that.

Honesty could be ugly.

Still preferable.

“But I should have found another way afterward.”

“Yes.”

“I kept the logs because I knew.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Charlotte nodded.

“I believe that.”

Forgiveness?

Not yet.

Daniel offered his resignation.

Sebastian refused to decide.

He looked at Charlotte.

“That is not my decision either.”

Charlotte frowned.

“You own the hotel.”

“Apparently I’ve owned too many decisions.”

He was learning too.

The independent board placed Daniel on temporary leave pending ethics review.

He accepted.

Charlotte hated watching another person lose something because of her story.

Victoria corrected her.

“This isn’t because of you.”

Charlotte looked at her.

“Because of his choice.”

Important.

They were all learning language.

Margaret was placed under formal corporate investigation.

Police questioned her regarding document fraud.

No immediate arrest.

Evidence needed sorting.

She left the hotel through a private exit.

No cameras.

Charlotte allowed that.

Margaret had humiliated her publicly.

Charlotte would not make punishment a spectacle.

The next morning newspapers exploded.

VALLE HEIRESS RETURNS FROM THE DEAD.

DIRTY CLOTHES, GOLDEN INVITATION.

HOTEL MATRIARCH ACCUSED OF FAMILY FRAUD.

Charlotte hated every headline.

Especially “heiress.”

It reduced eight years to money.

She gave no interview.

Sebastian wanted a press conference.

Charlotte refused.

“I’m not a comeback story.”

“What do you want?”

“To sleep.”

He looked ashamed.

“You have a suite.”

“I don’t want one.”

“Why?”

Charlotte stared around the hotel.

“Because the last time I trusted this place, people entered my room and planted evidence.”

Sebastian swallowed.

Fair.

Charlotte stayed at a small apartment Victoria arranged independently.

Two bedrooms.

No staff.

No chandeliers.

She slept twelve hours.

Then woke to forty-seven missed calls.

One from an unknown number.

Voicemail:

“Charlotte, my name is Marcus Bell. I worked for Northline Investigations.”

Her body tensed.

She called with counsel present.

Marcus had monitored Charlotte for five years.

He knew where she worked.

Where she lived.

Every time she changed cities.

Margaret requested reports.

But Marcus also admitted something worse.

“She sometimes asked us to interfere.”

Charlotte’s face hardened.

“How?”

“Employment background calls.”

“Landlord warnings.”

“Nothing violent.”

“Nothing illegal enough that we thought…”

He stopped.

Charlotte laughed.

“You thought ruining a person slowly was cleaner?”

Marcus looked ashamed on video.

“Yes.”

He would testify.

Why now?

Because he had seen the lobby clip.

Margaret slapping Charlotte.

Then the invitation.

He realized the woman he watched struggle for years had finally returned to the people paying him.

One detail stood out.

Margaret did not monitor Charlotte alone.

Someone else received copies.

Charlotte frowned.

“Who?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Sebastian Valle.”

Charlotte stopped breathing.

Her grandfather’s face went blank when confronted.

“I never received them.”

Marcus produced routing logs.

Reports copied to an executive email connected to Sebastian’s office.

Sebastian denied knowing.

Forensic review found the account.

Managed by his former chief of staff.

Margaret had created an alias inside Sebastian’s office, making surveillance reports appear delivered to him.

Another layer.

But Charlotte was no longer willing to accept convenient innocence.

“You never wondered where I was?”

Sebastian looked shattered.

“Yes.”

“Did you search?”

“I hired people the first year.”

“And?”

“They told me you refused contact.”

“Who told you?”

He closed his eyes.

“Margaret.”

Charlotte laughed through tears.

“You let one person become the entire family.”

“Yes.”

There it was.

Not criminal.

Still devastating.

Sebastian had not framed her.

He had made framing her easy by surrendering judgment.

Then Victoria arrived with urgent news.

Margaret had called an emergency shareholder meeting.

Despite suspension, she still personally controlled enough shares to make procedural motions.

Agenda:

SALE OF THE VALLE GRAND HOTEL.

Charlotte stared.

“To who?”

Victoria named the buyer.

Meridian Crown International.

Offer:

$620 million.

Closing window:

Forty-eight hours.

May you like

Margaret could not permanently keep Charlotte’s shares.

So she intended to sell the crown jewel before Charlotte could reclaim control.
