Chapter 4: The Price of Arrogance

Jack nodded toward Marcus, who slid a thick stack of legal documents across the polished table until they came to a rest directly in front of Eleanor and Vanessa.
"What is this?" Vanessa asked, her voice trembling, tears welling in her eyes as she looked at the man she had abandoned because her mother told her he wasn't wealthy enough.
"That is a total asset liquidation and restructuring agreement," Jack explained coldly. "Van Der Bilt Enterprises is currently $450 million in default to Vanguard Global. You are legally insolvent. If I take this to federal bankruptcy court tomorrow morning, your stock drops to zero, your creditors seize your personal accounts, and you both face potential fraud investigation for over-leveraging commercial properties using falsified valuation reports."
Eleanor let out a choked, ragged breath. The arrogant queen of high society was suddenly looking at the absolute destruction of her legacy, her social standing, and her freedom. "Jack... please. We are family. Lily is my granddaughter..."
"Do not ever say her name again," Jack commanded, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal warning that made the entire room freeze. "You lost the right to call yourself her grandmother the second you threw her heart across the floor."
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, his eyes locking onto Eleanor's pale, terrified face.
"Here are my terms," Jack said. "You will sign Van Der Bilt Enterprises over to Vanguard Global for the sum of one dollar. I will absorb your debt and pay off your creditors so the thousands of innocent employees who work for your subsidiaries don't lose their livelihoods because of your incompetence."
"And what about us?" Vanessa cried out, wiping mascara from her cheeks. "Jack, where do we go?"

"You will be left with your personal trust funds," Jack replied coldly. "Which generates roughly $80,000 a year. Enough to live a normal, quiet, upper-middle-class life in a suburban apartment. But you will resign from every society board, you will forfeit the Southampton estate, which was used as collateral for your loans, and you will sign a legally binding permanent no-contact order regarding Lily."
"You can't take Southampton!" Eleanor shrieked, a desperate, pathetic flash of her old arrogance resurfacing. "That house has been in my family for three generations! It’s who we are!"
"Not anymore," Jack said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "Sign the papers by 5:00 PM today, or Marcus files the default paperwork with the federal courts at 5:01. If you choose court, I will personally ensure the media gets the full financial autopsy reports. The society pages won't just drop you, Eleanor—they will laugh at you."
Jack picked up the glass case containing Lily’s clay heart. He looked at Vanessa one last time. There was no anger left in his eyes toward her—only a profound, pitying indifference.

"You chose money over a husband who loved you, Vanessa," Jack said softly. "I hope thirty-five thousand dollars a year is enough to keep you warm."
He turned and walked out of the boardroom, Marcus and the security team trailing behind him, leaving the Van Der Bilt dynasty in ruins on the mahogany table.
