Chapter 23 - The Broken Golden Child

The dingy diner on the edge of Revere smelled of rancid fry oil, stale coffee, and chemical floor cleaner. It was 3:45 AM. The world was dead asleep, muffled beneath eight inches of freshly fallen powder, but inside the corner booth, life was decaying in real-time.

Across from me sat Chloe.

She looked like a caricature of the spoiled, untouchable princess our parents had spent twenty years creating. The platinum-blonde salon hair was gone, replaced by a greasy, matted mess shoved haphazardly beneath a dirty knit beanie. Her manicured designer nails were broken down to the quick, ringed with dirt. Her designer coat, once worth four thousand dollars, bore cigarette burns on the sleeves. But the most horrifying thing was her eyes—wide, hollow, rimmed in raw, inflamed red, darting frantically toward the diner doors every time the wind made the glass rattle.

"You smell like smoke," Chloe whispered, her voice a reedy, trembling squeak. She wrapped both hands around a mug of lukewarm tap water, her knuckles white. "Claire... you smell like fire."

"Eleanor just tried to cremate me in my own living room," I said coldly, neither touching the mug in front of me nor blinking. "Did you buy the gas, Chloe? Or did you just hold the camera from the black sedan in the alley?"

Chloe flinched violently, as if I had physically struck her across the cheek. Her chin quivered, and for a terrifying second, I thought she was going to scream. Instead, tears spilled over her eyelashes, cutting clean tracks through the grime on her hollow cheeks.

"I didn't... I swear to God, Claire, I didn't know!" she choked out, dropping her forehead toward the Formica table before jerking it back up, her paranoia winning out. "Mom is crazy! She’s completely lost her mind! After Dad got arrested, she stopped sleeping. She kept pacing the floor of that disgusting motel, muttering your name. She said you stole Arthur's soul. She said you put a curse on the family bloodline!"

"And you stayed with her?" I asked, leaning forward, my voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "You stayed with her while she emptied the remaining emergency funds Arthur hid offshore? Where is the money, Chloe?"

Chloe swallowed, her throat making a dry, clicking sound. "He took it."

The diner seemed to drop ten degrees. "Who took it?"

"Julian," she whimpered, her hands trembling so severely that water slopped over the rim of her mug onto the laminate table. "The guy I met in Miami. The one who promised he could clean Arthur's accounts through an offshore shell company in Cyprus. He... he took the encrypted flash drive, Claire. He told Mom that if she wanted the money back to pay Arthur's high-priced defense lawyers, she had to give him leverage over you. He wanted your signature on the corporate assignment deed."

A cold realization swept over me, prickling the back of my neck. Julian. The shadowy figure Arthur had bragged about during the final board meeting—the mysterious angel investor who was supposed to bail out Vance Logistics before the audit hit. He hadn't been an investor. He was a vulture who had smelled the rot on our family six months before the collapse.

"Julian drove the car," I whispered, the puzzle pieces slamming into place with terrifying precision.

Chloe nodded frantically, tears streaming unchecked into the corners of her mouth. "He brought her the flare, Claire. He told her that if you were dead, or if you were terrorized enough to sign the assets over to Arthur's estate, the corporate trust would dissolve. He's not trying to save Dad. He's stripping the company bones clean... and he said I'm next if I talk."
