Chapter 9 - The Glass Cage at Mercer Manor

Daniel didn't go to the airfield.

He knew Valerie Rostova better than she thought. A woman who had spent a decade operating in the shadows of corporate espionage didn't flee on a traceable corporate jet from an airfield surrounded by federal radar. The jet in Bedford was a decoy—a flare sent up to draw the FBI and state police while she slipped away through her true extraction route.

She was going back to Mercer Manor.

Mercer Manor held the private deep-water dock. Beneath the boathouse was the *Siren*, a sixty-foot stealth-hulled offshore interceptor vessel she had convinced Daniel to purchase under a corporate subsidiary six months ago. From that dock, she could reach international waters in under two hours, rendezvous with an Ares container ship, and disappear forever.

At 2:50 AM, the storm reached its peak over Mercer Island.

The lights of the grand estate were dark, the three hundred gala guests long evacuated by local authorities following the "tragic accident" on the terrace. The rain whipped across the shattered glass of the south balcony where Lily had been thrown.

Inside the master suite, the safe behind the oil painting of Daniel’s great-grandfather was open.

Vanessa stood before it, wearing black tactical gear beneath a cashmere trench coat, shoving bearer bonds, encrypted hard drives, and fake passports into a waterproof duffle bag. Her platinum hair was pulled back tight. Her face was calm, cold, and utterly efficient.

"You forgot something," a voice said from the shadow of the doorway.

Vanessa spun around, her silenced Walther PPK raised in a heartbeat.

Daniel stepped into the room.

He was drenched, his clothes torn, his shoulder stained with blood. In his right hand, he held the laptop. In his left, Claire's silver star.

Vanessa’s eyes flickered with genuine shock—the first time Daniel had ever seen her composure crack. But within two seconds, the mask snapped back into place. A slow, chilling smile touched her lips.

"Daniel," she whispered, keeping the weapon trained directly at the center of his forehead. "You really are like a cockroach. You just won't die."

"Claire recorded everything, Valerie," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He set the laptop on the marble vanity. The video of Claire's murder was paused on the screen, Vanessa’s face frozen in the act of swinging the wrench. "The state police, the FBI, and the Department of Defense have this file right now. Marcus Vance forwarded it ten minutes ago. Your Cayman accounts are frozen. Your Ares handlers have already burned your identity. You're done."

Vanessa didn't look at the screen. Her eyes never left Daniel's.

"Ares doesn't burn assets like me, Daniel. They relocate us. And even if what you say is true, you won't live to see the trial." She tightened her finger on the trigger. "You should have stayed in the water with your pathetic little girl."

"Lily is alive," Daniel said.

Vanessa’s eyes widened slightly. "What?"

"Her heart stopped for forty seconds," Daniel continued, taking a step toward her. "She inhaled seawater. She nearly drowned. But Claire’s blood runs in her veins. She fought. She is in an off-grid ICU under twenty-four-hour armed guard. You failed, Valerie. You didn't kill Claire’s daughter. And you didn't break me."

"Don't take another step!" she hissed, her finger depressing the trigger halfway. "I will put a bullet through your eye, Daniel! I swear to God I will!"

"Do it," Daniel said, taking another step forward. His voice was dead, devoid of fear, devoid of hesitation. "Pull the trigger. Because if you don't kill me right now, Valerie... you don't leave this room."

"You think I won't?!" she screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into feral hysteria. "I crushed your wife's skull! I threw your daughter into the ocean! You are nothing! A sentimental, weak-minded fool who let a woman take everything you own!"

Daniel closed the distance.

*Click.*

The hammer fell on an empty chamber.

Vanessa gasped, looking down at the weapon in horror.

Daniel tilted his head. "Did you really think I didn't know you kept that gun in the nightstand? I pulled the firing pin out of that Walther three weeks ago, Valerie. I always knew something was off about you. I was just too cowardly to admit it to myself."

Vanessa dropped the gun and lunged for the duffle bag, where a combat knife was sheathed.

Daniel moved like lightning.

He grabbed her wrist, twisted it behind her back, and slammed her face-first against the plate-glass mirror of the vanity. The glass cracked under the impact. He ripped the duffle bag away, kicking it across the floor.

He had her pinned. His hand was on her throat, pressing her against the cold, shattered glass.

It would take two seconds. One sharp twist of his forearm, and her neck would snap. The woman who had murdered Claire, who had thrown Lily into the ocean, who had desecrated his life, would be dead. Justice would be instantaneous.

*Kill her,* the voice inside his head roared. *Kill her for Claire. Kill her for Lily.*

Vanessa looked at him through the mirror's reflection. Even pinned, her eyes were filled with venomous defiance. "Do it, Daniel," she choked out. "Kill me. Show Lily what her daddy really is. Become the monster."

Daniel stared at his reflection in the cracked mirror beside hers.

He saw the blood on his clothes. He saw the feral darkness in his own eyes. He saw the precipice he was standing on—the exact same darkness that had consumed Valerie, Grant, and Ares.

If he snapped her neck, Valerie didn't lose. She won. She would have turned Daniel into a killer, taking away the only thing Lily had left: a father with a clean soul.

Daniel took a slow, deep breath.

He released his grip on her throat and stepped back.

Vanessa stumbled forward, coughing, clutching her neck. She turned around, laughing hysterically. "You can't do it! You're weak! You'll always be—"

The heavy mahogany doors of the master bedroom burst open.

A tactical squad of Massachusetts State Police and Federal Marshals poured into the room, their assault rifles raised, laser sights painting Valerie's chest with a dozen red dots.

"Valerie Rostova! Do not move! Hands behind your head! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!"

Valerie froze, the red dots dancing across her face.

Daniel stood in the corner, holding Claire's silver star in his palm.

"She’s all yours, officers," Daniel said quietly. "Be careful with her. She likes to push people when their backs are turned."
