Chapter 10 - Wings Over the River

The symposium concluded three days later with a crisp, clear Friday afternoon washing over the Washington Navy Yard. The Potomac River gleamed like a silver ribbon under the autumn sun, reflecting the brilliant blue of a cloudless sky.

I stood on the expansive stone patio outside the main officers' club, watching a pair of F/A-18 Super Hornets streak high overhead in a tight tactical formation, their afterburners leaving faint, shimmering streaks across the horizon before disappearing into the upper atmosphere. The deep, thunderous roar of their engines vibrated in my chest, a familiar, beautiful music that I would carry with me for the rest of my life.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel behind me.

I turned to find Keira Lin walking over, holding a steaming paper cup of coffee. She wore her crisp white service shirt proudly, her surface warfare insignia gleaming brightly in the afternoon light.

"Good view, ma'am?" Keira asked, following my gaze up toward the empty sky where the jets had just vanished.

"The best kind," I smiled, taking a sip of my own coffee.

Across the patio, a group of senior officers stood chatting near the stone balustrade, among them several Marine colonels who now nodded respectfully in my direction as soon as our eyes met—careful, measured, and infinitely more polite than they had been a week ago. Accountability, it turned out, was a wonderful teacher.

My career wasn't defined by the bitter insults of a insecure man at a crowded bar, just as my identity wasn't determined by whether I wore a charcoal dress or a flight suit with gold wings. I had earned my wings in the hardest skies imaginable, and no amount of casual sexism or petty arrogance could ever strip away the hours I had logged above the clouds.

Keira stood beside me, leaning against the stone railing, looking out over the river with her chin held high and her shoulders square.

"What's next for you, Commander?" she asked quietly.

I looked down at the river, then back up at the vast, open sky stretching out endlessly before us.

"Back to the Pentagon, Lieutenant," I said, a quiet smile playing across my lips. "There's a stack of new tactical integration decks waiting on my desk. And honestly? Somebody has to make sure they're done right."

Keira laughed, raising her coffee cup in a silent, respectful toast. "Lead the way, ma'am. Lead the way."
