Chapter 2: The Fall and the Shadow Hospital

The fall was not into the open sky of the city street seventy floors below, but into the private indoor atrium of the sixty-ninth floor—a hidden, two-story indoor garden designed by Julian as a sanctuary.
Yet, a fifteen-foot drop onto landscaping earth and marble bordering was still a catastrophic impact.
Martha had used her own body as a physical shield during the split-second descent, twisting herself beneath Chloe. When they impacted the deep, damp soil of the atrium's raised garden beds, Martha bore the blunt force of the collision. Chloe landed heavily on top of the older woman, the breath knocked from her lungs in a violent gasp, her hands instinctively clutching her stomach.
Above them, through the gaping, jagged black hole in the ceiling, Julian’s agonized screams echoed down. He kicked the patio door open above, staring into the darkness of the atrium before scrambling toward the internal spiral staircase.
When Julian reached the sixty-ninth floor, the scene was a nightmare. Martha was unconscious, bleeding from a severe scalp laceration. Chloe was writhing in the soil, her face pale and covered in sweat, a sharp, terrifying contraction seizing her abdomen.
"Chloe!" Julian gasped, dropping to his knees beside her, stripping off his suit jacket to wrap it around her shivering shoulders. "I’ve got you. I’m calling an ambulance right now."
"No... Julian, the baby..." Chloe sobbed, gripping his forearm with terrifying strength. "She tried... your mother tried to kill us..."
Before Julian could dial emergency services, the private elevator doors of the sixty-ninth floor slid open. Three men wearing tactical medical scrubs and carrying specialized stretcher equipment marched out. They were not public paramedics; they were operatives from Vanguard-Sterling Tactical Health, an elite, private trauma unit hired exclusively by ultra-wealthy families for discreet medical crises.
Behind them walked Victoria Vance, her posture entirely unbroken, tapping her brass cane against the marble floor.
"Get them both on stretchers," Victoria ordered the private medics coldly. "Take the housekeeper to the private wing at St. Jude's. Take the girl to my personal clinic in the valley. Notify my personal obstetrician that we are inducing labor tonight."
Julian stood up, positioning his body between his mother and his wife, his fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. "You touch her again, Mother, and I swear to God I will throw you off this roof myself. I am calling the police."
Victoria tilted her head, watching her son with pitying condescension. "Call them, Julian. And tell them what? That an accidental structural failure occurred on our property? I have already wired a two-million-dollar settlement into Martha's family trust, and our corporate lawyers are currently drafting an NDA that will characterize this as a tragic construction defect. If you want your child to survive the night, you will step aside and let the best private surgeons in the state handle this birth."

Julian looked down at Chloe, who was crying out in agony as another violent contraction hit her. He was trapped. The public hospital ambulance was twenty minutes away through LA traffic; Victoria's private medical evacuation helicopter was already landing on the roof pad above them.
"If anything happens to my wife or my daughter," Julian whispered, his voice shaking with a dark, venomous promise, "I will dismantle every single dollar, every building, and every breath you possess."
