Chapter 8 - Independent Proof

Michael Reed was fast. Eighteen years of close-quarters combat training made his draw almost instantaneous. But Daniel was not reacting to a threat; Daniel was executing a sentence.

Before Michael’s fingers could wrap around the grip of his Glock, Daniel lunged forward. He seized Michael’s right wrist, twisting it inward with bone-snapping leverage, and drove his left elbow brutally into Michael’s jaw.

The impact sounded like a baseball bat striking wet timber.

Michael stumbled backward against the glass wall of the sixty-fourth floor, blood spraying from his split lip. He snarled, lunging forward with a combat knife slipped from his left sleeve, slashing upward toward Daniel’s throat.

Daniel ducked the blade, feeling the razor-sharp edge graze his cheekbone, drawing a hot line of crimson. He didn't retreat. He stepped inside the arc of the knife, driving his shoulder into Michael’s ribs, tackling him across the polished mahogany conference table.

The glass water carafes shattered. Documents scattered into the air like paper snow. Board members screamed, scrambling for the exits as the two men fought with feral, uninhibited brutality.

Michael drove the pommel of the knife into Daniel’s collarbone, trying to break the grip, but Daniel refused to yield. The image of Claire sitting on that cottage bed, holding her unborn child while a syringe hovered over her throat, flooded his vision with pure, incandescent fury.

Daniel seized Michael by the throat with both hands, driving his head down against the marble table once, twice, three times, until the knife clattered from Michael’s limp fingers and spun across the floor.

Daniel stood over him, chest heaving, blood dripping from his jaw, the suppressed weapon he had taken from Cole now leveled directly between Michael’s eyes.

Michael lay on the shattered glass, coughing blood, staring up into the barrel of the gun. He smiled—a bloody, broken grin.

“Do it,” Michael wheezed. “Shoot me, Daniel. Prove to Claire that you’re the monster she ran from. Kill me in front of your board. Let your daughter grow up visiting her father in maximum security.”

Daniel’s finger tightened against the trigger. The cold metal curve bit into his skin. Every instinct forged in the brutal streets of his youth screamed at him to pull it—to end the betrayal, to erase the threat, to wash away the stain of his own stupidity in Michael’s blood.

The room was deathly quiet except for the distant wail of sirens rising from Michigan Avenue sixty-four floors below.

Daniel stared down at the man who had been his brother, his protector, and his executioner.

And then, Daniel remembered Claire’s voice in the nursery: *“Eventually, Daniel, you became the same man everywhere.”*

Daniel slowly eased his finger off the trigger. He flipped the safety on, reversed the grip of the gun, and brought the heavy steel handle down across Michael’s temple, knocking him into instant, deep unconsciousness.

He stepped back, tossing the weapon onto the table.

“No,” Daniel whispered to the unconscious traitor. “You don't get the easy way out, Michael. You’re going to spend the rest of your life in a concrete box, watching from a prison TV while I raise my daughter in the light you’ll never see again.”

The boardroom doors burst open.

A tactical squad of Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, weapons drawn, swept into the room, followed by Agent Miller and the US Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

“Federal agents! Hands where we can see them!”

Daniel slowly raised his bloody hands into the air, stepping away from the conference table.

“He’s down,” Daniel said, his voice hollow with complete exhaustion. “His terminal access codes are on that drive. Elena Vance is in the corridor. Take them.”

Agent Miller lowered his weapon slightly, looking at the bloody CEO, then down at the unconscious security chief. “Mr. Carter? We have your wife in protective custody downstairs. She’s demanding to see you.”

Daniel’s knees almost buckled at the words. “Is she alright?”

“She’s safe,” Miller said, signaling his agents to cuff Michael and secure Elena. “Paramedics are checking her over now. She told us everything, Mr. Carter. She gave us the forensic accounting ledgers she pulled three months ago. Your wife just handed us the largest corporate conspiracy case in Chicago history.”

Daniel closed his eyes, leaning back against the wall, the tears washing through the blood on his face.

May you like

“She isn't just my wife,” Daniel murmured, his voice breaking with awe and unworthiness. “She’s the only reason any of this was ever worth saving.”
