Chapter 5 - The Chairman's Trap

Julian Vance’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. Beneath the veneer of polite corporate charm, the older man possessed the cold, calculating demeanor of a shark that had survived decades of corporate warfare. He studied me not with lust or surprise, but with sudden, sharp suspicion.

"Accounting," Vance repeated, swirling the amber liquid in his crystal glass. "A fascinating department. So much raw data passing through those quiet little hands. Tell me, Ms... Woods, is it? Do you find numbers as thrilling as I do?"

"Only when they tell a story," I replied smoothly, holding his gaze without a single tremor of hesitation. "Some stories are tragedies about mismanaged funds. Others are fairy tales about overnight millionaires. And occasionally..." I leaned in just a fraction, lowering my voice so only the three of them could hear, "...they’re indictments."

Larkin’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He took a sharp step closer, closing the distance between us until I could smell his cologne—sandalwood and expensive bourbon. His voice was a low, vibrating growl meant only for my ears.

"What game are you playing, Penelope?" he murmured, his face inches from mine. "You think dressing up in designer silk changes who you are? You're an employee. An asset on my payroll. And by Monday morning, I can make sure you never work in this city again."

Instead of shrinking back, as the old Penelope would have done, I smiled—a slow, terrifyingly calm expression that made a muscle tick in Larkin's jaw.

"Is that a threat, Mr. Steves?" I whispered back, my voice as sweet as poison. "Because threatening an officer of the court—or in this case, someone who has already uploaded duplicate financial logs to an independent federal server—usually violates a few SEC regulations."

Larkin froze. The ice in his blue eyes shattered completely, replaced by a sudden, electric flash of pure panic. He knew. He realized right then and there that the mousy little secretary carrying his coffee wasn't a victim; she was an apex predator who had just backed him into a corner.

"What did you say?" Larkin hissed, grabbing my bare arm with a grip that was entirely too tight.

Before I could answer, a flashbulb popped nearby.

"Mr. Steves! Over here!" a society blogger called out, holding up a professional camera. "Is this lovely lady your mystery date for the evening? Rumor has it Steves Technologies is about to announce a massive acquisition—is she the mastermind behind it?"

The attention of the entire western wing of the ballroom swung toward us. Flashlights blinded us for a split second, and the murmurs of the elite grew louder.

Larkin had no choice. He slowly released my arm, forcing a rigid, public-relations smile onto his face as the cameras clicked away, capturing the tense, electric intimacy between the ruthless tech billionaire and his terrifyingly gorgeous secretary.

"Not quite, Jonathan," Larkin said smoothly, his voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins. "Ms. Woods is... an essential part of our financial security. And tonight, she's proving just how valuable her insights really are."

"Valuable doesn't even begin to cover it, Mr. Steves," I whispered, turning on my heel and walking away, leaving the two most powerful men in New York standing in the dust of their own impending destruction.
