Chapter 29 - Blood on the Marble

The panic in the Temple of Dendur was instantaneous and hysterical. Society women screamed, scrambling over rows of gilded chairs; men in bespoke tuxedos dove for cover behind ancient stone sarcophagi.
"Nobody moves!" Christian screamed, his voice cracking with madness. "There are four hundred pounds of military-grade C4 lined along the structural pylons beneath this floor! One click, and this entire monument collapses into the subway tunnels below!"
The tactical team halted, their weapons drawn, lasers painting red dots across Christian's chest.
"Christian, put it down," Victoria said, walking past the line of police officers, stepping directly into the blast radius of her mad husband. "You are too narcissistic to kill yourself. You love your own myth too much."
"You destroyed my life, Victoria!" Christian spat, spittle flying from his lips. "I built this world! I made you who you are! You were a penniless schoolteacher when I found you, and you turned on me!"
"I didn't destroy your life, Christian," Victoria said, stopping just five feet away from him, her eyes completely devoid of fear. "I just stopped letting you destroy mine."
Suddenly, Julian lunged.
Driven by the ultimate betrayal—the realization that his father had used him as disposable bait while leaving everything to Aurora—Julian threw his entire body weight into Christian.
"You bastard!" Julian screamed.
The two men crashed onto the polished limestone floor. The detonator flew from Christian’s grip, skidding across the slick stone and tumbling over the edge into the ancient reflecting pool with a sickening splash.
*Bang!*
A deafening gunshot echoed through the hall.
Julian froze atop his father. A dark, blooming stain of crimson exploded across the front of Julian’s pleated tuxedo shirt. Christian held a small, two-shot derringer pistol that had been strapped beneath his wrist, smoke curling from the barrel.
"You weak, pathetic boy," Christian wheezed, shoving his dying son’s body off of him.
Julian collapsed onto the marble, choking on his own blood, his eyes locking onto Victoria in a final, agonizing plea for forgiveness that would never come.
Christian scrambled to his feet, lunging toward the edge of the reflecting pool to retrieve the submerged detonator. "I'll kill you all!"
Before he could reach the water, Marcus emerged from the shadows of the columns. Despite his shattered arm, Marcus leveled his service weapon with one hand and fired two clean, devastating rounds into Christian’s kneecaps.
Christian screamed, a horrific, guttural sound, collapsing face-first onto the marble. The pool water turned red as blood pooled from his shattered legs.
Federal agents swarmed, pinning the fallen patriarch to the floor, slapping heavy tactical restraints onto his wrists and ankles.
Victoria stood over the broken man who had terrorized her for half a century. She looked down at him not with triumph, but with an icy, final detachment.

"The fourteen-minute ruin is complete, Christian," Victoria whispered. "Take him away."
