Chapter 13 - The Whispering Syndicate

"Explain," Claire commanded, her tone dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper.
Margaret pulled against her chains, leaning across the steel partition until the heavy links clattered taut against the bolt. "Julianne didn't die because of a petty inheritance squabble between sisters! Do you think I cared about this stupid theater? About dusty velvet seats and orchestra pits? The Vance Trust holds the deed to the Manhattan Deep Harbor terminal—the only privately held deep-water port on the Hudson River that bypasses federal customs inspection!"
Claire’s mind raced, connecting the fragmented puzzle pieces she had unearthed during the trial. "The terminal Julianne’s grandfather bought in 1942."
"Yes!" Margaret hissed, spitting flecks of saliva onto the table. "For eighty years, that harbor has been used by the *Cabal of the Five Pillars*. They move diamonds, unregistered gold, and government black-budget weapons through that port. Julianne found the duplicate manifests. She was going to go to the FBI. So they told me: *Either kill your sister, or watch your own children be dissected alive in front of you.*"
Margaret began to hyperventilate, rocking back and forth in her chair, the shackles clinking rhythmically against the concrete. "I pushed Julianne off that balcony because they gave me no choice. And then you showed up with that brat! Julianne had written the ownership of the harbor terminal directly into Emma's biological trust, naming you as sole trustee! The syndicate gave me a deadline: eliminate Emma, take the port, or die."
"And now you're in here," Claire said, her voice devoid of sympathy. "So they've taken the contract into their own hands."
"They don't send hitmen to scare you, Claire," Margaret wept, genuine madness cracking her gaze. "They send *The Carver*. He doesn't leave witnesses. He skins his targets' faces and mails them to the morning papers to remind the city who truly rules it. He is a ghost! If he left that lily in your room, it means your countdown has already begun. You have less than forty-eight hours before he bleeds your child dry!"
Suddenly, the fluorescent lights overhead flickered violently and died.
The entire wing of the maximum-security facility plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
Claire instantly rose to her feet, her hand dropping to the combat knife she had concealed within the lining of her boot. The heavy steel door behind her hissed, its pneumatic locks releasing with a sickening, mechanical clunk as the backup generators failed to kick on.
Through the total blackness came the heavy, deliberate thud of combat boots approaching down the exterior corridor.
Then came the wet, sickening sound of an iron blade slicing through flesh, followed by the muffled gurgle of a correctional officer choking on his own blood.

"He's here," Margaret shrieked into the dark, thrashing in her iron chains with hysterical panic. "HE'S INSIDE THE WALLS! CLAIRE, UNLOCK ME! DON'T LEAVE ME TO DIE IN CHAINS!"
