Chapter 5 - The Web of the Black Widow

Julian sat in a nondescript conference room on the twenty-fourth floor of the Manhattan District Attorney's office. Spread across the long laminate table were dozens of crime scene photos, forensic financial charts, and fingerprint analyses spanning four states over a twelve-year timeline.

Beside him sat Detective Marcus Miller and Special Agent David Vance (no relation) from the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit.

"Her real name is Clara Novak," Agent Vance said, sliding a black-and-white mugshot from 2011 across the table. In the photo, an eighteen-year-old girl with dark hair and hollow cheeks stared sullenly into the camera. "Arrested in Seattle for petty theft and forgery. Charges were dropped when she agreed to act as an informant against a local identity theft ring. She vanished from the system two weeks later."

Julian stared at the face. The bone structure was the same, but the rest had been meticulously reshaped. Nose job. Veneers. Bleached blonde hair. Voice lessons to erase the Pacific Northwest cadence in favor of an aristocratic, mid-Atlantic drawl.

"She doesn't just marry for money, Julian," Miller explained, his tone heavy. "She's an architect. She targets wealthy men who have vulnerable family structures. Arthur Montgomery was an alcoholic widower. She isolated him from his children, drained his liquid assets, and then Arthur suffered a 'fatal heart attack' brought on by acute potassium poisoning. Two years later, Richard Sterling—a reclusive software entrepreneur who had just lost his brother. Drowned in his own pool after taking what was ruled an accidental overdose of muscle relaxants."

"And then she targeted me," Julian whispered, the horror thick in his throat.

"You were the grand finale," Agent Vance said. "The Vance family name. Over a hundred million in old money. A paralyzed mother who controlled the primary family trust until her death, at which point the entire estate devolved to you—and in the event of your death or incapacity, to your legal spouse."

Julian felt cold sweat pooling at the base of his neck. "She wasn't just planning to kill my mother. She was going to kill me, too."

"Of course she was," Miller said bluntly. "The candlestick incident wasn't supposed to happen like that. Eleanor had figured out that Evelyn was dosing her tea. Eleanor tried to tell her private nurse, but Evelyn fired the nurse yesterday morning. When Eleanor threatened to call you directly, Evelyn panicked and decided to stage a fatal 'fall' right then and there. You just happened to come home forty minutes before she could set the stage."

"And the pregnancy?" Julian asked, his voice shaking. "Is it... is it mine?"

Agent Vance sighed, closing a manila folder. "The medical records from the correction facility confirm she is indeed ten weeks along. Paternity can't be legally compelled until the second trimester without a court order, but given the timeline, yes, Julian. It's almost certainly yours. And right now, that unborn child is her golden ticket out of a maximum-security prison."

Before Julian could respond, the heavy conference room door burst open. ADA Linda Rodriguez entered, her face flushed with fury, holding a vibrating smartphone.

"We have a catastrophic breach," Rodriguez said, out of breath.

Miller stood up immediately. "What happened? Did Dominic Kane file an injunction?"

"No," Rodriguez hissed. "Thirty minutes ago, Evelyn was being transferred from the county holding facility to the Serenity Pines Medical Clinic in North Salem. The private security transport was ambushed at a four-way intersection near Route 116."

Julian jumped out of his chair. "Ambushed? Who ambushed them?"

"Two black SUVs boxed them in," Rodriguez explained, reading rapidly from a police dispatch transcript. "Smoke grenades were deployed. The private guards were tased and disarmed. The transport driver had his jaw broken. Evelyn Vance's GPS ankle monitor was cut off and thrown into the bed of a passing commercial flatbed truck."

"She had an extraction team," Agent Vance said, his eyes widening. "She didn't hire Dominic Kane to win a legal trial. She hired him to buy her twelve hours of administrative processing so her outside muscle could pull her off the road!"

Julian’s mind flashed back to the house. The grand, empty estate.

"My mother," Julian choked out, panic seizing his chest like an iron fist. "Where is Eleanor?"

"Eleanor is still at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan under round-the-clock armed guard," Miller said, reaching for his firearm on his hip. "She's safe, Julian. Evelyn wouldn't go into the city. She's heading for an exit. A private airstrip or a marina."

"No," Julian said, his eyes locking onto Miller’s. The realization struck him with the clarity of a lightning strike. "You don't understand her. You see a criminal who wants to escape. I lived with her for six years. Evelyn Novak is a narcissist. She doesn't just run. She punishes."

"What are you talking about?" Rodriguez demanded.

May you like

Julian grabbed his coat, heading for the door. "She told me in the courtroom: *It's your move.* She isn't leaving the country until she takes the one thing she thinks belongs to her. The bearer bonds in my personal safe at the penthouse. And she knows that's the only place I’d run to."
