Chapter 19 - The Safehouse in the Pines

"What did you do?!" Victoria screamed, frantically typing commands into the master terminal inside the vault, only to be met with cascading red error prompts.

"My mother was an undercover agent, Marcus," Claire said, a fierce, triumphant smile breaking through the blood on her lips. "She knew that if you ever captured me, you would use my biometric pulse to crack the safe. She didn't program my heartbeat to open the vault. She programmed it to trigger a scorched-earth deletion virus!"

Marcus’s face contorted into pure, demonic fury. "Kill them both!" he roared, swinging his pistol toward Claire’s chest.

In that split second of chaotic distraction, Ethan drove his boots into the shins of the mercenary standing over him. The guard stumbled, and Ethan surged upward, using his bound arms like a battering ram to slam his back into Marcus’s torso.

The gunshot exploded in the enclosed stone cellar, deafening everyone. The bullet ricocheted wildly off the steel ceiling, striking the overhead power cables. Sparks rained down like fireworks as darkness plunged the room again, lit only by the violent, flashing red strobe of the purging servers.

Ethan threw his body across Claire’s chair, shielding her as automatic gunfire tore through the air.

"Richard!" Ethan bellowed into the darkness.

From the top of the cellar stairs, a deafening concussive blast erupted. Flashbang grenades tumbled down the stone steps, detonating in blinding white light and earsplitting cracks. State tactical police officers, alerted by Richard’s emergency beacon, swarmed down the stairs, their laser beams slicing through the smoke.

"DROP YOUR WEAPONS! STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

Through the smoke and strobe lights, Ethan felt hands cutting through his zip-ties. He rubbed his wrists raw, instantly unbuckling Claire from the metal chair and lifting her into his arms.

"I've got you," Ethan murmured, his heart pounding in his chest. "I've got you."

In the chaos, gunfire erupted between Marcus’s mercenaries and the SWAT team. Ethan saw Victoria sprint out through an old drainage tunnel at the back of the vault, carrying a single titanium briefcase.

Marcus turned, clutching a bleeding shoulder where a ricochet had grazed him. He looked at Ethan through the haze of smoke. His eyes held no remorse, only a chilling, promise of total annihilation.

Before the tactical officers could surround him, Marcus pressed a remote detonator in his palm.

A localized blast collapsed the stone ceiling directly between the police and the rear exit, burying the vault entrance in tons of shattered limestone and blinding dust.
