Chapter 5 - The Mask Completely Crumbles

The cold click of the handcuffs seemed to snap the final thread of Victoria Vance's sanity as the lead detective hauled her roughly to her feet.
Her sculpted blonde bob was a tangled mess, her designer mascara had run down her cheeks in jagged black streaks, and the neon-pink gown was torn at the shoulder.
She looked no longer like the polished queen of Manhattan high society, but like a cornered felon whose delusions of grandeur were evaporating in real time.
"Julian, you can't let them do this to me!" Victoria screamed, thrashing against the two officers holding her arms.
"I am your wife! The Vance name will be dragged through every tabloid in the world if I walk out of this building in chains!" she shrieked.
Julian walked over to where his mother sat resting on a cushioned lounge chair that two catering staff had rushed over for her.
He knelt beside Eleanor, kissing her trembling forehead, ensuring she was wrapped in warm wool blankets provided by the hotel staff.
Only when he was certain his mother was safe did Julian slowly rise and turn to face the woman he had spent half a decade loving.
He reached down to his left hand, gripped the heavy platinum wedding band that had symbolized his devotion, and pulled it slowly off his finger.
The silence on the terrace was deafening as eighty elite guests watched the billionaire drop the platinum ring onto the cold marble floor.
The ring clinked twice, rolling across the stone until it came to a dead stop against the toe of Victoria's high heel.
"You are not a Vance, Victoria," Julian said, his voice completely devoid of emotion, colder than the wind blowing across the parapet.
"You are an attempted murderer, a corporate thief, and tomorrow morning, my legal team will file the paperwork to strip you of every cent you ever took from this family," he stated.
Victoria stared down at the discarded ring, her face contorting into an expression of raw, unadulterated hatred.
"You think you've won, Julian?" Victoria laughed, a ragged, unhinged sound that made several nearby guests shudder in disgust.
"You think I worked alone? You think a woman who doesn't understand hedge funds could set up shell companies in three different offshore jurisdictions?" she mocked.
Julian's eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of cold suspicion crossing his features as he stepped closer to the arresting officers.
"What are you talking about?" Julian demanded, his voice hard as flint.
Victoria leaned forward, spitting blood and saliva onto the marble between them, her eyes flashing with venomous triumph.
"Check the signature on the trust liquidation documents, darling," Victoria sneered, her voice carrying across the terrace.
"I didn't forge your mother's name on those transfers... your Chief Financial Officer signed off on every single transaction this afternoon!" she revealed.
A collective gasp echoed across the terrace as Julian's jaw tightened, the realization of a much deeper corporate betrayal piercing through the night.
"Thomas signed off on the liquidation?" Eleanor whispered from her chair, her voice trembling in shock at the betrayal of her oldest corporate friend.
"He's currently at JFK boarding a private charter to Zurich with forty million dollars of your liquid capital, Julian!" Victoria cackled with wild delight.
"Arrest me, put me in prison, but you'll spend the next ten years untangling the bankruptcy of Vance Global while the world laughs at you!" she screamed.
The lead detective gripped Victoria's arm firmly, signaling his partner to move her toward the service elevators.
"Alright, that's enough out of you, lady. You can tell your bedtime stories to the federal prosecutors," the detective barked, pulling her toward the doors.
As Victoria was dragged across the shattered champagne glass, she locked her blazing eyes onto Clara Higgins one last time.
"I will remember your face, you miserable maid!" Victoria hissed like a dying snake.
"When my lawyers get me out on bail, you won't be safe on any street in this city!" she threatened.
Marcus Brody stepped directly into Victoria's path, his massive chest blocking her view of Clara entirely, his expression menacingly calm.
"You won't be seeing any street for the next twenty-five years, ma'am," Marcus said flatly.
"Now keep walking before I add witness intimidation to your official booking sheet."
The officers shoved Victoria into the elevator car, the stainless steel doors sliding shut with a heavy mechanical thud that finally cut off her venomous screams.
The rooftop fell into an eerie, reverent quiet, the wealthy guests standing awkwardly, unsure whether to offer condolences or make their exit.
Julian turned around and addressed the crowd, his voice projecting with the absolute authority of a man reclaiming his domain.
"The party is over. Security will escort everyone down the south freight elevators," Julian announced without looking at any of them.
Within minutes, Marcus and his team efficiently cleared the terrace, leaving only Julian, Eleanor, Clara, and the lead detective standing in the cold night air.
Eleanor reached out with trembling hands, beckoning Clara to come closer to her chair.
Clara approached cautiously, feeling out of place among the billionaire family now that the violence had subsided.
"Come here, child," Eleanor said softly, taking Clara's bruised, bandaged hands into her own frail palms with infinite tenderness.
"You held my life in your hands over that ledge, Clara," Eleanor murmured, tears streaming down her aged cheeks.
"You bled for a woman you didn't even know, while the person I called family tried to throw me into the dark."
"I just did what was right, ma'am," Clara replied quietly, looking down with genuine humility.
Julian stepped beside his mother, looking at Clara with an expression of profound respect that money could never buy.
"Doing what is right almost cost you your life tonight, Clara," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion.
"Tomorrow morning, Vance Global will announce the creation of the Eleanor Vance Foundation for Workers' Rights, and you will be appointed its executive director," Julian declared.
Clara's eyes widened in complete shock, her breath catching in her throat.
"Mr. Vance, I... I'm just a catering server, I don't know how to run a foundation," Clara stammered, overwhelmed by the sudden magnitude of the offer.
"You have more courage, integrity, and spine than every executive on my board of directors combined," Julian answered firmly.
"We will teach you the business, but nobody can teach the world the kind of honor you showed tonight."
Eleanor nodded in fierce agreement, patting Clara's hand before looking up at her son with a grave, hardened expression.
"We have a company to save, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice recovering the razor-sharp strength that had built an empire decades ago.
"Thomas is at JFK airport right now, and if that private jet leaves American airspace, Vance Global burns to the ground."
Julian pulled his encrypted smartphone from his inner pocket, his eyes flashing with lethal determination as he tapped the commissioner's direct line.

"Marcus, prep the penthouse helicopter on the north pad," Julian ordered, his voice echoing across the empty, wind-swept terrace.
"We're going to intercept that runway before my CFO's wheels leave the tarmac."
