Chapter 23 - The Collapse of an Empire

For ten agonizing seconds, the only sound was the howling of the wind and the rhythmic drumming of rain against the slate roof.
The two armed guards looked nervously at each other, their guns beginning to waver. They were paid mercenaries, not fanatics; they weren't about to commit federal kidnapping for an employer whose financial empire was on the verge of total collapse.
"Marcus?" the lead guard muttered through his teeth. "What are the orders?"
Marcus Vance looked at Ryan. In Ryan’s eyes, there was no fear, no hesitation—only the lethal resolve of a man who had faced death in the icy depths of the lake and refused to break.
Marcus looked down at Noah. The boy wrenched himself free from Marcus's grip, sprinting across the muddy lawn as fast as his little legs could carry him.
"RYAN!" Noah sobbed, throwing his arms around Ryan’s waist, burying his wet face into the cold rubber of the wetsuit.
Ryan dropped the cylinder, falling to his knees and wrapping both arms around Noah, pulling him tight against his chest, shielding him with his own body. Sarah dropped beside them, wrapping her arms around both brothers, weeping with relief.
Marcus took a slow, rattling breath. The refined, untouchable aura of power had vanished, leaving behind only a bitter, aging man whose lifelong web of deceit had finally unraveled.
"You think this is over, Ryan?" Marcus said, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You think you can raise an empire’s heir on sentiment and fishing poles? The world will come for him. Investors, boards of directors, sharks who make me look like a saint."
"Let them come," Ryan replied, looking up with eyes like flint. "He won't be facing them alone."

Marcus turned sharply, walking toward the lead SUV. "Clear out," he snapped to his guards. "Now."
The engines roared, the heavy tires tearing deep ruts into the manicured grass as the convoy sped down the driveway, through the gates, and vanished into the stormy night.
