Chapter 3 - The Notice to Vacate

By two o'clock on Monday afternoon, the sky over the city had turned into a slate-gray sheet of low-hanging clouds, drizzling a cold, miserable rain over the manicured estates of Westbridge.

At the gates of 404 Westbridge Drive, Eleanor Vance was hosting her monthly executive committee luncheon for the Carolina Symphony Gala. Through the sprawling French windows of the ground-floor solarium, eight women dressed in pastel knit suits and pearls sat around a long mahogany table, sipping dry white wine and nibbling on caterer-prepared salmon tartines. Eleanor sat at the head of the table, perfectly coiffed, her diamond tennis bracelet catching the ambient light of the crystal chandelier above.

She was in the middle of delivering a cutting critique of a rival patron's floral arrangements when the heavy wrought-iron intercom at the driveway entrance began to buzz insistently.

Eleanor frowned, dabbing her lips with a linen napkin. "Robert must have forgotten his gate transponder again," she murmured to the women with an indulgent, practiced roll of her eyes. "Men are utterly helpless when their routines are disrupted."

She rose gracefully, smoothed the pleats of her silk skirt, and walked into the foyer, tapping the screen of the intercom panel mounted to the wall.

"Yes? Robert, darling, you know I have company—"

"Eleanor Vance?" a flat, monotone voice crackled through the speaker.

"This is Mrs. Vance. Who is speaking?"

"Wake County Sheriff’s Department, Civil Process Division. Ma'am, open the gate, or we will be forced to use the emergency override."

Eleanor’s hand froze over the panel. A sudden, sharp constriction seized her chest. She stepped toward the leaded-glass sidelights of the front entrance and looked down the long, winding asphalt driveway. Idling outside the perimeter gate was a marked Wake County Sheriff cruiser, accompanied by a sleek black sedan driven by a private process server in a dark suit.

Her heart began to hammer against her ribs. *Robert handled it,* she thought to herself, her mind racing in circles. *He took the trust papers to Daniel this morning. Daniel was supposed to fold. He always folds.*

Trembling slightly, Eleanor pressed the release button. The heavy black gates slowly groaned backward.

She retreated to the living room, her face draining of color, trying desperately to maintain the illusion of high-society composure as the cruiser rolled up the drive and parked directly beside the pristine lawn—right in front of the white-and-red real estate sign that boldly proclaimed: **EXCLUSIVE LISTING: 11,000 SQ FT ESTATE. CASH OFFERS ONLY. CONTACT RACHEL MORGAN.**

A sharp knock rattled the front door.

Eleanor walked forward, her heels clicking on the hardwood floor with an unnatural stiffness. She opened the door just a crack.

Standing on the porch was Deputy Sheriff Miller, a broad-shouldered officer with a service weapon on his hip and a body-worn camera blinking green on his tactical vest. Beside him stood a thin, middle-aged man carrying a clipboard and two thick Manila envelopes.

"Eleanor Vance?" the process server asked.

"What is the meaning of this?" Eleanor said, her voice dropping into the haughty, aristocratic register she used to intimidate retail clerks and waitstaff. "I am in the middle of hosting a board meeting for the Carolina Symphony. Whatever clerical error your department has made, I suggest you—"

"Are you Eleanor Vance, wife of Robert Vance?" the man interrupted, completely unmoved.

"Yes, I am, but—"

"You are formally served," the process server said, thrusting the thick envelopes into her hands. "Civil summons, Emergency Eviction Petition under North Carolina General Statutes, and an Unconditional Notice to Vacate within seventy-two hours issued by the Wake County District Court on behalf of Vance Holdings LLC."

Eleanor stared at the legal documents in her hands as if they were venomous snakes. "Eviction? This is my house! My son owns the holding company!"

"Not according to the registered deed and the district court judge who signed this order at twelve-thirty today, ma'am," Deputy Miller said, stepping forward. His tone was professional, devoid of sympathy. "The owner has terminated your tenancy at will based on extensive non-payment, lease default, and documented criminal endangerment occurring on the property. Furthermore, ma'am, I need to know if your daughter, Melissa Vance, is currently inside this residence."

A chill ran down Eleanor’s spine, freezing the breath in her lungs. "Melissa? Why on earth would you need to speak to my daughter?"

Deputy Miller reached into his duty jacket, pulling out a folded piece of paper with an official gold seal from the magistrate's office.

"I have an active misdemeanor warrant for her arrest for simple assault and battery against Claire Vance, along with an emergency Chapter 50B Domestic Violence Order of Protection barring Melissa Vance, Robert Vance, and Eleanor Vance from coming within five hundred feet of Claire Vance, Daniel Vance, or their primary residence."

From the dining room, the sound of laughter and clinking wine glasses abruptly stopped. Eleanor turned her head in absolute horror to see three of the prominent symphony board members standing in the hallway, their eyes wide as saucers, taking in the uniform, the badge, and the legal notices clutched in Eleanor’s manicured hands.

"No," Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking. "No, this is a mistake. This is a private family matter!"

"Ma'am," Deputy Miller said, his hand resting casually near his belt. "Is Melissa Vance inside the premises? Answer me now, or I will be forced to request entry to execute this warrant."

Before Eleanor could answer, the sound of high heels echoed down the grand spiral staircase. Melissa appeared on the landing, wearing silk pajama bottoms and holding an iced coffee, her face contorted in irritation.

"Mom, who is making all that noise? I'm trying to sleep—"

Melissa stopped dead. Her gaze locked onto the uniform of Deputy Miller.

"Melissa Vance?" the deputy asked, stepping firmly across the threshold into the foyer.

"What... what is this?" Melissa stammered, the iced coffee cup slipping from her fingers and crashing onto the imported Italian marble, splashing dark liquid and ice cubes across the floor. "Mom, what is going on?!"

May you like

"Melissa Vance, you are under arrest," Deputy Miller stated, advancing toward the stairs with a pair of steel handcuffs already drawn from his duty belt. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
