Chapter 7 - Ashes in the Nursery

I stepped back out into the corridor.

The environment had shifted entirely. What had been a private family confrontation was now an open occupation.

Two dozen armed men in black tactical gear, bearing the insignia of *Aegis Strategic Solutions*—my private security firm—now held the perimeter of the intensive care unit. The nurses and floor staff had been quietly relocated to the lower floors under the guise of an emergency federal biohazard quarantine.

The nine Hart men were now lined up against the corridor wall, their hands zip-tied behind their backs. The arrogance that had sustained them for decades had evaporated into a puddle of sweat and panic.

Daniel was weeping openly. "Adrian, please. Think about Mom’s memory. She wouldn't want you to destroy us!"

"Your mother died fifteen years ago, Daniel," I said coldly, walking over to the central nurses' station and opening my laptop. "And if she were alive tonight, she would spit in your faces."

I connected Clara’s blue flash drive into the terminal.

With a few keystrokes, the encrypted contents synced with the automated legal protocol I had initiated thirty minutes earlier.

"Protocol Black is not an assassination order," I explained, leaning back against the desk, looking at Peter Hart. "I know that’s what you thought it was. You thought I was going to have men take you into the woods and put bullets in the back of your heads. That would be too merciful. That would be an end to your suffering."

I turned the laptop screen toward Peter.

On the screen, live feeds showed federal agents from the FBI, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, and the Department of Transportation raiding Hart Construction headquarters downtown. Boxes of documents were being hauled out into the rainy street under flashing blue and red emergency lights.

"At this exact moment," I said, "the United States Attorney for the Eastern District is unsealing twenty-seven indictments for federal procurement fraud, wire fraud, racketeering, and involuntary manslaughter dating back to the 2018 bridge collapse you pinned on your subcontractors."

Peter’s chest heaved. "You can't prove that... the records were shredded!"

"The paper was shredded," I said smoothly. "The digital backups were mirrored on my private servers the day after the incident. I held them because Clara asked me to protect you. I kept the sword in its scabbard. Tonight, you unsheathed it."

Eric began to hyperventilate. "What about our houses? Our families?"

"Every trust fund established under the Hart name has been dissolved," I replied without blinking. "The collateral was secured by your company's municipal bonds. Those bonds are now worthless junk. Tomorrow morning, eviction notices will be served on your estates in North Hills. Your luxury cars will be repossessed by noon. Your children’s private school tuitions will be revoked by the end of the week."

"You monster!" Peter screamed, lunging forward despite his bindings, only to be forced down onto his knees by two Aegis operatives. "You took my daughter, and now you’re taking everything I spent fifty years building!"

May you like

"You didn't build it, Peter," I said, crouching down to meet his bloodshot eyes. "You stole it. And tonight, you used that stolen empire to murder my child. You will live the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security cell, knowing that every breath you take is paid for by the state, wearing an orange jumpsuit, eating slop from a plastic tray, with nothing to keep you company except the memory of what you did to Clara."
