Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Kingdom

Rhonda didn't argue. She didn't shout. The venom that had filled her thirty minutes earlier had evaporated, replaced by the hollow, shuffling terror of an elderly woman who suddenly realized she was entirely destitute.

She gathered her leather binder with trembling hands, her papers spilling onto the floor. She scrambled to pick them up, crawling on the kitchen tiles like a wounded animal. Heath didn't move to help her. He sat frozen on the barstool, staring at the blue notary stamp on the Irrevocable Trust agreement.

When the front door clicked shut behind Rhonda’s departure, the silence that settled over the house was deafening.

Heath slowly lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot, his face crumpled into a mask of pathetic, desperate pleading.

"Evie," he croaked, reaching his hand across the island toward mine.

I pulled my hand back, out of his reach.

"Evie, please," he begged, tears finally welling in his eyes. "You have to understand. I was terrified. The debt was suffocating me. Dale promised me we could flip the logistics contract and make three times the money. I was trying to build wealth for *us*. I wanted to be the provider you deserved! I wanted to show my mom that I wasn't like my father!"

"By stealing from me, Heath?" I asked, my voice cutting through his tears like glass. "By sitting at this counter last night, propping your mother on speakerphone, and handing me a list of rules that treated me like an indentured servant in my own home?"

"That was Mom’s idea! She pressured me! She said you needed to be brought down to earth, that you were too proud, that you wouldn't respect me unless I took control!"

"And you listened to her," I said. "Because deep down, Heath, you agreed with her. You hated that I bought this house alone. You hated that my credit score was eight hundred while yours was in the gutter. You hated that I didn't need you to survive."

"I love you, Evelyn!" he sobbed, standing up, taking a step toward me.

"Do not take another step," I said, my voice dropping into a tone of quiet, lethal authority.

He froze.

"You don't love me, Heath. You loved my equity. You loved my clean credit. You loved the idea of a smart, capable woman handling your mess while you played the big man at the dinner table."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone.

"Melissa is still on the line," I told him. "And parked two houses down the street is a process server from Fulton County. In his hand is an emergency Petition for Annulment based on pre-marital fraud and misrepresentation, along with a temporary restraining order requiring you to vacate these premises immediately."

Heath’s mouth opened and closed soundlessly. "An... an annulment? We’ve been married six days!"

"Which makes the paperwork remarkably clean," Melissa’s voice rang out from the phone. "Under Georgia law, fraud that goes to the essence of the marriage contract is absolute grounds for annulment. There will be no divorce proceedings. There will be no alimony. There will be no division of property. In the eyes of the law, Mr. Vance, you were never Evelyn’s husband. You were merely an unauthorized occupant."

Heath dropped back onto the barstool, burying his face in his hands, weeping openly.

The humiliation was complete. The kingdom he had imagined taking over had vanished before his eyes, leaving him with nothing but his debts, his forged documents, and the ruins of his mother’s home.
