Chapter 6 - The Confession of Richard Vance

Mom shrieked—a raw, animalistic sound of pure betrayal. "Richard, NO! What have you done?!"

Lauren leapt to her feet, knocking her wine glass off the table this time. It shattered on the hardwood floor, dark red wine and shards of glass spraying across the baseboards. "You called the feds on your own daughter?!"

"I didn't call them to turn you in," Dad said, his face pale, his jaw set like stone. "They already have you, Lauren. The indictment was signed two weeks ago. I called them because your mother came to me yesterday and told me that if I didn't help her pressure Maya into paying the restitution, she was going to forge Maya’s name on a guarantor bond using the personal information she kept from Maya’s old tax returns."

A cold shudder ran down my spine. I looked at Mom, feeling a sense of revulsion so deep it made me physically sick.

My own mother had planned to steal my identity to save Lauren.

"You were going to commit fraud against me?" I whispered, my voice trembling with rage. "You were going to ruin my life, drag my name into a federal indictment, just to keep Lauren out of prison?"

Mom didn't look away. Her eyes were hard, glassy, and completely detached from reality. "You wouldn't have gone to prison! You have the money! The lawyers would have sorted it out! You could afford the hit, Maya! Lauren couldn't! Why can't you understand that?!"

"Because she’s a criminal, Diane!" Dad shouted, slamming the binder down onto the table. "And so are you! For twenty years, I let you run this house like a dictatorship of guilt! I watched you break Maya’s spirit! I watched you steal her grandfather’s legacy! I told myself I was keeping the peace! I told myself that a good husband supports his wife, that a good father protects his children!"

Dad’s voice cracked, tears finally spilling over his wrinkled cheeks.

"I was a coward," Dad said, turning to look directly at me. His shoulders slumped, the weight of a lifetime of moral compromise crushing him downward. "The biggest failure in this house isn't Lauren, and it isn't Diane. It’s me. Because I saw what was happening to you, Maya. I saw you working until your hands bled. I saw you studying by the glow of the streetlamp outside your window because your mother complained that your desk light was keeping Lauren awake. And I said nothing. I gave you the keys to a broken car and told myself you were strong enough to survive it."

"Dad..." I choked out, a lump the size of a fist lodging in my throat.

"No, Maya. Let me finish," Dad said, wiping his face with the back of his hand. "When your mother showed me those court papers three days ago, she thought I would fold again. She thought I’d help her manipulate you. But when I looked at Lauren’s file, I saw the names of the victims. Real people. Elderly patients who had their identities stolen. Widows whose insurance accounts were drained. And then I looked at the daughter I raised, and I realized: we didn't raise a daughter. We raised a parasite."

"DAD!" Lauren screamed, falling to her knees by her chair, sobbing hysterically. "How can you say that to me?! I’m your baby!"

"You’re thirty-four years old, Lauren," Dad said, looking down at her with a mixture of pity and utter revulsion. "And tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, Special Agent Miller from the FBI is arriving here with a warrant for your arrest. I gave them the financial records they were missing from the home office."

Dad pointed to the binder on the table.

"The paper trail is complete. The restitution won't save you from prison anymore, Lauren. It’s over."
