Chapter 9 - The Final Ultimatum

Two weeks later, the true fallout arrived on my doorstep in the form of a visitor I didn't expect.

It wasn't my mother or my father. It was Melissa.

She stood on the stone porch, stripped of her gold heels, her designer sunglasses, and her smug, condescending sneer. Dressed in an oversized hoodie and faded jeans, her eyes swollen and red from crying, she looked like a ghost haunting the steps of the house she had tried to steal.

I didn't invite her in. I stood behind the locked storm door, looking at her through the glass.

"Claire," she said through the screen, her voice hoarse and broken. "Please. Just five minutes."

I opened the door three inches, keeping the security latch engaged. "You have sixty seconds, Melissa."

"Daniel’s bail was set at one hundred thousand dollars," she sobbed, clutching her hands against her chest. "Arthur and Evelyn remortgaged their own house to pay the bondsman, but the legal fees... the defense attorney wants fifty thousand dollars upfront. Daniel's investors filed a civil lawsuit yesterday. They froze all our joint accounts. We have nothing, Claire. The bank is repossessing our cars next Tuesday."

"And what does that have to do with me?" I asked, feeling nothing—no anger, no sympathy, only an empty, detached curiosity.

"Drop the criminal charges," she begged, dropping to her knees right there on my doormat. "If you drop the charges, the prosecutor said they might reduce the counts to misdemeanors. Daniel won't have to go to state prison. He can get a job. He can support the boys. If he goes to prison, we lose our home. We lose everything."

I looked down at her. Two weeks ago, this woman had sat on my kitchen counter, drinking my wine, laughing with thirty relatives while proclaiming that I was too poor, too insignificant, and too useless to deserve a home like this.

"You told everyone I could never afford this place, Melissa," I said calmly.

She flinched as if I had struck her. "I was wrong! I was stupid! I was just repeating what Evelyn said! Daniel told me he made the down payment! I didn't know about the forgery, Claire! I swear on my children's lives, I didn't know he forged your name!"

"Maybe you didn't know about the forgery," I replied. "But you knew I hadn't invited you here. You knew this wasn't Daniel's house when you broke the lock. You enjoyed taking it from me because you thought I was weak. You thought I was the quiet little sister who would roll over and take it, just like I did when Daniel took my college savings and my car."

"Claire, please—"

"Get off my porch, Melissa."

"Claire! Think of your nephews! They're nine and six! They didn't do anything to you!"

"Which is why you should spend less time begging me to save your husband from the consequences of his own crimes and more time explaining to your sons why their father is a thief," I said.

I closed the heavy front door, engaged the deadbolt, and walked away.
