Chapter 6 - Witness / Evidence

The executive boardroom of Prescott Global on the fortieth floor smelled of polished mahogany, expensive leather, and industrial-strength panic.

Through the double glass doors, I could see the senior board members pacing like caged wolves. The morning business papers had run the story on page three: *PRESCOTT GLOBAL HIT BY DOMESTIC SLACK SCANDAL AS MERGER DEADLINE LOOMS.* The firm’s stock had already dipped four percent in pre-market trading, and institutional investors were demanding an emergency explanation.

At 10:00 a.m., Nathan and I walked into the room unannounced.

Aaron sat at the head of the long conference table, flanked by Arthur Sterling, his aging personal attorney, and Jasmine Cole. Aaron looked terrible. His skin was gray, his eyes were sunken, and he had clearly not slept in forty-eight hours. Jasmine, by contrast, looked radiant in a tailored charcoal dress, though a flicker of irritation flashed across her porcelain features the moment she saw me enter.

"What is the meaning of this?" Arthur Sterling barked, rising shakily to his feet. "Mrs. Prescott, this is a closed executive session of the board of directors. You have no legal standing to interrupt this meeting!"

"Sit down, Arthur," Nathan Brooks said, tossing a thick bundle of bound documents onto the middle of the mahogany table with a thunderous slap. "Before you embarrass yourself and expose your client to federal wire fraud charges."

Aaron slammed his hands down on the table. "Claire, stop this! I told you we would handle the divorce privately! Bringing your divorce lawyer into my corporate boardroom is completely out of line!"

"I'm not here as your divorcing wife, Aaron," I said, remaining standing, commanding the room with effortless poise. "I am here as the authorized representative of Aegis Capital Partners."

The entire room went dead silent.

Two senior board members—elderly gentlemen who had known my father for forty years—exchanged shocked, bewildered glances. Aaron frowned, looking confused. "Aegis? What does Aegis have to do with you?"

"Everything," Nathan answered. "Aegis Capital is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vance Maritime Holdings. Claire Vance holds sole discretionary authority over the covenant enforcement of your six-hundred-million-dollar credit facility."

Aaron’s face turned an alarming shade of chalk-white. He slowly turned his head to look at Jasmine, then back at me. "You... you own Aegis?"

"My family does," I said coldly. "And pursuant to Section 8 of the Aegis Master Loan Agreement, any material misrepresentation of corporate liabilities constitutes an immediate, non-curable default. Which brings us to you, Jasmine."

Jasmine let out a sharp, condescending laugh. "This is absurd. This is a desperate, pathetic attempt by a bitter woman to retaliate against a professional colleague who happened to fall in love with her husband. Mr. Sterling, please have security escort them out."

Nobody moved. The board members were staring at the documents Nathan had laid on the table.

"Mr. Lind spent the last thirty-six hours analyzing the digital metadata of the Kaelen Industrial merger covenants," Nathan announced, addressing the board directly. "Specifically, the documentation Ms. Cole submitted to Aaron on October 14th in Zurich."

Nathan walked over to the digital projector console, inserted a thumb drive, and tapped the screen. The massive digital monitor mounted on the boardroom wall illuminated with a series of encrypted WhatsApp messages, banking wire transcripts, and forensic email headers.

"These are messages extracted from a private server hosted in Zug, Switzerland," Nathan said. "Sent from Ms. Cole's encrypted phone to an executive named Julian Vance-Tempest—her biological brother, and the Managing Director of Vanguard Meridian."

Jasmine’s dismissive smile vanished instantly. Her hands gripped the edge of the conference table until her knuckles turned white.

"Read message forty-seven," I said, looking directly at Aaron.

Aaron turned his head toward the screen. His eyes traced the glowing text:

*‘Aaron took the bait. He signed the mezzanine covenants without having outside counsel review the Swiss clauses. Once Claire goes public with the affair, the reputational trigger will activate. Helvetia Prime will exercise voting rights by Friday. Aaron will be out, and Prescott Global is ours.’*

The silence in the boardroom was so absolute you could hear the air conditioning vents humming softly overhead.

Aaron slowly turned his head to look at Jasmine. The expression on his face was one of complete, devastating psychic obliteration. It was the look of a man who had suddenly realized that the woman who whispered sweet affirmations into his ear at night was the executioner hired to sever his head.

"Jasmine..." Aaron whispered, his voice trembling with an agonizing mix of disbelief and horror. "You... you told me Helvetia Prime was a neutral Swiss trust. You told me they were friends of yours from London."

Jasmine didn't answer. The sweet, adoring facade she had worn for four months completely dropped away. Her jaw set into a cold, contemptuous sneer.

"Don't be so dramatic, Aaron," she said, her voice dripping with venomous disdain. "You're an arrogant, mediocre middle-manager who inherited a firm his father built and mistook luck for genius. You were practically begging to be taken. If it wasn't me, someone else would have stripped this company from your hands within two years."

Aaron flinched as if struck across the face with an iron bar.

She turned her cold eyes on me. "Congratulations, Claire. You saved his company. But you still don't have your husband."

I looked at her, feeling neither anger nor triumph—only a profound, pristine pity.

May you like

"I don't want him, Jasmine," I said softly. "You can keep his suits. You can keep the coat you stole from my closet. But as of ten minutes ago, Aegis Capital has issued an injunction freezing all Swiss proxy accounts. Your firm has failed. And you have fifteen minutes to clear your desk before the United States Marshals arrive to escort you off the premises."
