Chapter 5 - The Glass Fortress

By 0400 hours, the tactical situation in the Strait of Malacca was stabilizing, though the geopolitical tension remained razor-sharp.

Inside the Situation Room, I stood before the main digital theater display with an electronic stylus in hand, briefing the Joint Chiefs and the President.

"The foreign salvage frigates were testing our response time," I explained, drawing an exclusion perimeter around the grounded container ship. "They assumed that because the vessel was operating under a secondary commercial waiver, the United States wouldn't assert sovereign asset protection. But this vessel carries high-yield turbine assemblies destined for our Seventh Fleet replenishment depot in Yokosuka."

"What’s our play, Amelia?" the Chief of Naval Operations asked.

"We deploy the destroyer USS John Finn and the fast-response salvage vessel Salvor from Changi Naval Base immediately," I stated without hesitation. "We invoke Article 4 of the Maritime Security Protocol. We don't fire a shot, but we place an Aegis-guided destroyer directly between their frigates and the grounded ship. We secure the cargo, take command of the salvage operation, and reopen the commercial channel within forty-eight hours."

The President leaned back in his leather chair, studying the digital map, then looked up at me with a faint smile.

"Decisive, clear, and avoids an international incident," the President said. "Execute the order, Admiral Hayes. You have full theater authority on logistics and salvage coordination."

"Thank you, Mr. President."

Three hours later, the initial crisis was contained. The foreign vessels backed down the moment the John Finn slipped between them and the stricken container ship. The salvage teams were already cutting the tangled cables.

I walked out of the West Wing into the pale, crisp light of an early Sunday morning. My eyes burned with fatigue, but my mind was completely clear.

Lieutenant Commander Chen met me on the colonnade, holding my secure phone. "Admiral, you have forty-two missed calls on your civilian line. All from the same two numbers in Chicago."

I took the phone.

Arthur Hayes. Grant Hayes. Over and over.

There was also a single text message from a number I didn't recognize. I opened it.

Amelia, it's Mom. I found your trunk. I found your medals. I am so sorry. Please, forgive me. Your father is coming to Washington. He's bringing Grant. They are terrified. Don't let him bully you anymore.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

My mother had spent my entire life looking the other way. Hearing her finally acknowledge the truth didn't bring me the wave of triumph I thought it would; it only brought a profound, quiet sadness for the years we had lost to Arthur’s ego.

"Commander Chen," I said, handing the phone back.

"Yes, Admiral?"

"My father and brother will likely attempt to visit the Pentagon or the Navy Annex by midday tomorrow. They are under active federal investigation by NCIS and Homeland Security regarding the Meridian Star manifest."

Chen’s eyes widened slightly, but her professional composure never wavered. "Understood, ma'am. How should security handle them?"

"Issue them standard civilian visitor badges," I said evenly. "Escort them to Conference Room Bravo at the Pentagon. Let them wait. And notify the NCIS Special Agent in charge of the maritime procurement audit to be present."

"Will you be attending, Admiral?"

May you like

I adjusted my white service cap, looking out toward the Washington Monument rising against the dawn sky.

"Oh yes," I said. "It's time my father finally learned about my boats."
