Chapter 6 - THE MISSING HOURS

The recovered hard drive contained weeks of ordinary domestic life—delivery drivers, gardeners, Lily racing through hallways in mismatched socks—but investigators focused on the final forty-eight hours before it had been ripped from the recorder.

What they found transformed Vanessa from an unreliable witness into something far more complicated.

Two nights before the pool incident, Caleb entered the mansion through the service door.

Vanessa let him inside.

They argued in the kitchen.

There was no audio, but Vanessa repeatedly pointed toward the exit while Caleb blocked her path.

Then he produced papers.

Vanessa read them.

Her anger disappeared.

Fear replaced it.

The next morning she transferred money.

Three hundred thousand dollars.

To Northstar Aquatic Solutions.

Brooks confronted her.

Vanessa finally broke.

Caleb had been blackmailing her.

He possessed photographs proving their affair, but that was not the real leverage.

Months earlier, Vanessa had secretly moved money from a charitable foundation Ethan established after his first wife died.

The foundation funded pediatric rehabilitation programs.

Vanessa had told herself she was borrowing it.

She used the money to cover gambling debts.

Caleb discovered the transfers.

Then he owned her.

“You stole from sick children,” Ethan said when he was finally allowed to confront her with attorneys present.

Vanessa cried.

“I was going to put it back.”

“That sentence doesn’t put it back.”

“I made mistakes.”

“You hurt Lily.”

Vanessa could not answer.

“That wasn’t a mistake,” Ethan said. “That was a choice.”

He filed for divorce that afternoon.

He also requested an emergency protective order preventing Vanessa from contacting Lily.

The court granted it.

For Lily, however, the legal victories meant little.

She wanted to know whether she could ever go home.

Ethan sat beside her on the porch of the protected rental house.

“Do you want to?”

She thought about it.

“Not if the pool is there.”

He nodded.

“Then we don’t have to.”

“You love that house.”

“I love you more.”

Lily leaned against him.

It was the simplest decision Ethan had made all week.

He listed the mansion for sale the following morning.

Meanwhile, the investigation tightened around Caleb.

Financial records showed he had stolen not six million dollars but nearly fourteen million over three years.

The missing amount had remained invisible because Caleb manipulated vendor accounts and used Vanessa’s unauthorized foundation withdrawals as camouflage.

He had planned to frame her if the audit reached him.

Then Ethan began asking the right questions.

Caleb needed time.

The contaminated pool was supposed to create it.

But Caleb had disappeared.

His passport had not been used.

His credit cards were silent.

His primary vehicle was found abandoned near a train station.

Brooks believed he was still nearby.

Ethan believed the same thing.

“He won’t run without the money,” Ethan said.

“What money?”

“The cash reserve.”

Brooks looked at him.

Ethan explained that Cole Meridian maintained an emergency corporate reserve requiring two executive authorizations.

One belonged to Ethan.

The other belonged to Caleb.

“How much?”

“Eight million.”

“Can he access it?”

“Not without me.”

Brooks understood.

“He still needs you.”

That evening Ethan received another unknown message.

This time there was a photograph.

It showed Claire leaving the protected house that morning.

Underneath were four words.

WE NEED TO TALK.

Ethan immediately handed the phone to Brooks.

A trace attempt failed.

Then a second message arrived.

COME ALONE OR I DISAPPEAR.

There was an address.

An abandoned distribution warehouse formerly owned by Ethan’s company.

Brooks expected Ethan to refuse.

Instead Ethan said, “He wants me there.”

“Yes.”

“So use me.”

“No.”

“He needs my authorization.”

“He may need something else.”

“Then we find out.”

Brooks stared at him.

“You’re not an action hero, Mr. Cole.”

“I know.”

“You have a daughter.”

“That’s why I’m doing it.”

After a long argument, they built a controlled operation.

Ethan would go.

Police would surround the warehouse.

He would wear a transmitter.

He would not provoke Caleb.

He would not attempt to apprehend him.

Most importantly, he would leave the moment Brooks gave the signal.

Before departing, Ethan sat beside Lily’s bed.

“Where are you going?”

“To finish some grown-up business.”

“Will you come back?”

The question struck harder than anything Vanessa had done.

Ethan kissed her forehead.

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

He looked directly into her eyes.

May you like

“I promise.”

And this time, unlike every business trip that had come before, Ethan understood exactly what that promise cost.
