Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Wall

The scene inside the room seared itself into my retina like a branding iron.

In the center of the white room sat an examination chair with padded leather restraints. Vanessa stood over it, wearing surgical scrubs, holding a pre-loaded hypodermic auto-injector filled with a pale amber fluid.

And strapped into the chair, her little hands secured by soft velvet cuffs, was Emma.

Her cheeks were blotched red from crying. Her hair was matted with sweat. But when the door flew open and I charged in, her eyes met mine through the blinding glare of the surgical lights.

“DADDY!” she shrieked.

“Drop the syringe!” Ramirez’s voice cracked like thunder as she entered behind me, her weapon locked onto Vanessa’s forehead. “DROP IT OR I’LL BLOW YOUR HEAD APART!”

Vanessa didn't flinch. Her eyes were chillingly calm. She didn't drop the needle; instead, she rested the bevel of the stainless steel tip directly against the skin of Emma’s carotid artery.

“Take one more step, Detective, and she receives fifty milligrams of intra-arterial potassium,” Vanessa said, her voice smooth, level, and entirely devoid of human empathy. “Her cardiac rhythm will cease within four seconds. You can shoot me, but my reflex will empty the syringe before my brain hits the floor.”

SWAT flooded the room, four red laser dots converging on Vanessa’s chest, but none of them could take the shot with the needle touching Emma’s throat.

“Daniel,” Vanessa smiled, a grotesque, patronizing parody of the woman who had kissed me goodnight for seven months. “You shouldn't have come. This was supposed to be painless for you. You were supposed to find a farewell note tomorrow morning, think she was gone, and take a handful of oxycodone like the others. You’re ruining the elegance of the methodology.”

“You monster,” I rasped, taking half a step forward, my hands raised, shaking with unadulterated hatred. “Let her go. Take me. Whatever you want from her, I’ll sign it. Take my life, take my blood, just let my daughter walk out that door!”

Vanessa laughed—a high, musical sound that belonged in a parlor, not a torture chamber.

“Take you?” she scoffed. “You’re an architect, Daniel. A biological dead end. You contributed nothing to this child. Helena didn't use your sperm to conceive Emma. Did she really never tell you?”

The room tilted. My vision blurred around the edges. “What did you say?”

“Claire—Helena—used you as a cover story,” Vanessa sneered, her hand remaining rock-steady against Emma’s neck. “Emma is a pure clonal duplicate of our primary donor, Madame Eleanor Vance, the matriarch who financed the entire Sterling project before she died in Geneva. Emma’s genetic sequence is worth hundreds of millions because she holds the biological keys to reversing telomere degradation. Emma doesn't belong to you. She belongs to the estate that paid for her existence.”

Emma was sobbing uncontrollably now. “Daddy, Bunny is hurt! Bunny is hurt!”

Vanessa glanced down at Emma with disgust. “Shut up, child. Soon you won't even know what a rabbit is.”

That split-second distraction—a half-second shift in Vanessa’s gaze toward the chair—was all Ramirez needed.

Ramirez didn't fire her weapon. Instead, she threw a heavy flashbang canister she had already unpinned with her off-hand directly beneath the examination chair.

“COVERS!” Ramirez screamed.
