Chapter 6 - The Eye in the Ceiling

Ethan’s smirk didn't vanish instantly, but it froze, like wet plaster setting in winter air.

“The router was fried,” Ethan said smoothly, though his eyes narrowed into razor slits. “A power surge destroyed the firmware two weeks ago.”

“That’s what you told Sarah,” Detective Miller said, walking toward the foot of the bed and setting the tablet upright on the rolling tray table. “And you were very smart to physically cut the blue ethernet cable running to the wall jack. It made the network status light stay amber. Anyone checking the home app would see the device marked ‘Offline’.”

Miller swiped his thumb across the screen.

“What you didn't realize, Mr. Clark, is that modern high-definition security cameras don't rely solely on localized Wi-Fi bridges when they experience a sudden signal severance. The model you installed three years ago—the *Arlo Pro 4*—comes equipped with an internal LTE fallback chip and a micro-SD card slot hidden behind the waterproof battery housing.”

Ethan’s throat bobbed. A single, involuntary swallow.

“You thought you turned the camera off,” Miller continued, his voice echoing in the small hospital room with the weight of an iron gavel. “In reality, every time motion was detected in that garage over the last fourteen days, the camera wrote thirty-second encrypted video clips directly to that internal flash card.”

Miller hit the play button on the tablet.

The screen flickered to life. The high-resolution night-vision footage was crystal clear, timestamped March 12th—two nights ago—at 2:41 AM.

On the screen was Ethan.

He wasn't wearing his glasses. He was wearing heavy neoprene work gloves. The video showed him dragging a silver pressurized tank from behind the tool cabinet, connecting a high-pressure brass regulator to the copper bypass line that ran directly through the ceiling drywall into our central HVAC trunk.

We watched in absolute silence as Ethan tested the valve. He used a digital pressure gauge to measure the flow rate, his lips moving as he counted the seconds, his face illuminated by the green glow of the LED readouts.

Then, the camera caught something that obliterated any shred of doubt that could ever exist in any courtroom on earth.

Ethan turned directly toward the camera lens. He pulled out his phone, opened a voice-memo app, and held it to his mouth, reviewing his checklist aloud:
