Chapter 5 - THE MAN BESIDE THE OAK TREE

The man in the video was named Marcus Reed.Ethan did not recognize him.
Daniel did.
“He works for Victor Hale.”
Ethan looked up sharply.
“The intermediary?”
Daniel nodded.
They enlarged Rachel’s garden-party footage on the television.
Marcus stood partly hidden near the large oak tree, dressed too formally to be catering staff and too isolated to appear like an ordinary guest.
He watched Vanessa.
Not Noah.
Not Gloria.
Vanessa.
“What was he doing at my house?”
Daniel crossed his arms.
“Maybe making sure she followed through.”
“With humiliating my son?”
“I don’t know.”
Ethan hated that answer.
By afternoon, Vanessa had left the estate accompanied by her attorney.
A temporary agreement prohibited contact with Noah while authorities and family court reviewed the evidence.
It was not the final outcome Ethan wanted.
But it gave Noah space.
The house became quiet.
Too quiet.
Noah refused to go downstairs.
Every sound from the garden made him freeze.
Ethan cancelled every meeting for the week.
His executive team could manage the company.
His son had been forced to manage fear alone for too long.
The first two days, Ethan tried too hard.
He offered pancakes shaped like animals.
Movies.
Toys.
A trip anywhere Noah wanted.
Noah declined everything.
Finally Elena pulled Ethan aside.
“He doesn’t need entertainment.”
Ethan looked exhausted.
“What does he need?”
“You.”
“I’m here.”
“No.”
Elena touched his arm.
“He needs you to stop trying to fix the room and sit inside it with him.”
That evening, Ethan stopped making suggestions.
He sat on Noah’s bedroom floor.
Noah was building something from wooden blocks.
Ethan waited.
Ten minutes passed.
Then Noah pushed one block toward him.
Ethan placed it on the tower.
Another block came.
Slowly they built together.
After nearly an hour, Noah whispered, “Vanessa said Mommy left because of me.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
“What?”
“She said Mommy got sick because I cried too much.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Noah looked down.
“Is that true?”
Ethan moved closer.
“No.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
“Why did Mommy die?”
Ethan swallowed.
“Because her body became very sick, and the doctors couldn’t make it better.”
“Not because of me?”
“Never because of you.”
Noah began crying.
Not loudly.
That made it worse.
Ethan held him.
For two years, Noah had carried grief.
For months, Vanessa had weaponized it.
Later that night, Daniel called.
“We found Marcus.”
Ethan stepped into the hallway.
“Where?”
“He contacted me.”
“Why?”
“He wants protection before he talks.”
Ethan’s voice hardened.
“From Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Victor?”
“Yes.”
The meeting took place the next morning at Daniel’s office.
Marcus Reed looked nothing like Ethan expected.
He was thin, nervous, and exhausted.
He kept checking the hallway.
Ethan sat across from him.
“You were at my house.”
Marcus nodded.
“Why?”
“To deliver documents.”
“To Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“What documents?”
Marcus swallowed.
“Original trust papers.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“You had them?”
“Victor did.”
“How?”
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
“I was told Vanessa gave him access.”
“What did they want?”
Marcus rubbed his palms together.
“Control.”
Ethan waited.
Marcus continued.
“Vanessa owed Victor money.”
“How much?”
“Almost eight hundred thousand.”
Ethan stared.
“For what?”
“Investments. Gambling. Private loans. I don’t know all of it.”
Daniel took notes.
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Victor realized your son’s trust was worth more than Vanessa expected.”
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“How much?”
“Approximately twelve million when Noah turns twenty-one. More depending on appreciation.”
Sarah’s family had left Noah substantial assets.
Ethan knew that.
Vanessa apparently knew more.
Marcus continued.
“The plan was to create conditions allowing Vanessa temporary control.”
“By making Noah look unstable.”
“Yes.”
Ethan’s fists tightened.
“The garden party?”
Marcus shook his head.
“That wasn’t part of the plan.”
“Then why were you there?”
“Victor sent me because Vanessa was panicking.”
“About what?”
“You had started asking questions about account transfers.”
Ethan remembered.
Three weeks earlier, his accountant had mentioned unusual payments from a household management account.
Vanessa explained them as renovation expenses.
Marcus took an envelope from his jacket.
The same envelope visible in the video.
“I was supposed to give her these.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside were instructions.
Destroy original copies.
Move funds before review.
Obtain signature on child evaluation.
Ethan stared.
“This is conspiracy.”
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel looked at him.
“Why give this to us now?”
Marcus looked toward the window.
“Because yesterday I watched a five-year-old boy get treated like a dog.”
His voice shook.
“I knew we were moving money.”
“I knew documents were being manipulated.”
“But I didn’t know she was hurting him.”
Ethan’s anger softened slightly.
Marcus continued.
“When she put that chain around him, I realized what kind of people I was working for.”
He looked directly at Ethan.
“I should’ve stopped it.”
“Yes,” Ethan said.
Marcus nodded.
“I know.”
The honesty mattered.
Marcus handed Daniel a flash drive.
“What’s this?”
“Copies of Victor’s messages with Vanessa.”
Daniel connected it to his laptop.
Hundreds of screenshots appeared.
Money transfers.
Instructions.
Arguments.
Threats.
Then one message made Ethan stop.
VANESSA: ETHAN STILL THINKS SARAH NEVER SUSPECTED ANYTHING.
VICTOR: KEEP IT THAT WAY.
Ethan’s pulse changed.
“Go back.”
Daniel did.
Another message appeared.
VANESSA: IF HE FINDS THE LETTER SHE LEFT, EVERYTHING CHANGES.
Ethan stared.
“What letter?”
Marcus looked confused.
“I don’t know.”
Ethan immediately thought of the missing correspondence from Rebecca.
Sarah’s sister.
He called her.
She answered on the second ring.
“Ethan?”
Her voice carried years of distance.
“I need to ask you something.”
Silence.
“Did Sarah leave me a letter?”
Rebecca stopped breathing.
Then she whispered.
“You never got it?”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“No.”
Rebecca began crying.
“Oh God.”
“What was in it?”
“She wrote it three days before she died.”
Ethan’s hands shook.
“What did she say?”
Rebecca’s response came slowly.
“She said she was afraid of someone.”
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“Who?”
May you like
Rebecca spoke the name.
“Vanessa.”
