Chapter 4 - The Secret Her Father Buried

Emily had spent eleven years believing her father died with no unfinished business.

Thomas Carter had suffered a heart attack at fifty-nine.

It happened on a Tuesday morning inside the original Carter Ridge office.

One moment he had been arguing with a contractor about delayed roof repairs.

The next he was on the floor.

Emily was twenty-seven.

Within seventy-two hours she went from being Thomas Carter’s daughter to being responsible for a company carrying nine million dollars of debt and employing sixty-two people.

She never had time to wonder whether her father had secrets.

There had been payroll to make.

Banks to reassure.

Projects to finish.

Employees asking whether they would still have jobs.

Now Adrian Cole stood inside Keller’s Diner and suggested Thomas’s past somehow connected to Ethan.

Emily studied him.

He appeared to be in his mid-fifties. Expensive coat. Gray tie. Calm eyes.

The type of man who never needed to raise his voice because he expected rooms to quiet automatically.

Daniel entered the diner.

Adrian noticed him.

“Security?”

“Friend,” Emily said.

Adrian smiled.

“Your father used to say people reveal their priorities by the words they choose.”

Emily felt anger rise.

“Don’t quote my father to me.”

“Fair.”

Michael stepped beside her.

“We’re leaving.”

Adrian ignored him.

“Emily, ask yourself why Ethan applied to Carter Ridge.”

“He didn’t apply. We met socially.”

“Exactly.”

Emily stared.

They had met at a charity auction in Boston.

At least, that was the story she remembered.

Ethan had been helping organize corporate sponsorships.

He bumped into her near the silent-auction tables.

They argued playfully over a signed Red Sox photograph.

He made her laugh.

Three months later they were dating.

Two years later they married.

Six years after that she gave him a senior job.

It had always seemed accidental.

Romantic, even.

Adrian watched understanding spread across her face.

“Who sent Ethan to that auction?” Emily asked.

Michael looked at her sharply.

Adrian picked up his untouched business card and placed it closer to her.

“Meet me tomorrow.”

“No.”

“You’ll want to.”

“Then tell me now.”

“Not here.”

“I’m getting tired of men deciding when I’m allowed to know things about my own life.”

Something flickered in Adrian’s expression.

Respect perhaps.

Or calculation.

He pulled a folded paper from his coat.

“Your father signed this fifteen years ago.”

Emily opened it.

The document was a settlement agreement.

Thomas Carter.

Blackwood Development Partners.

The amount listed was twelve million dollars.

Emily looked up.

“My father never had twelve million dollars.”

“He didn’t pay twelve.”

“What was the dispute?”

Adrian paused.

“Land.”

Emily almost laughed at the cruel simplicity.

“North Haven?”

“No.”

“Where?”

“Greenwich.”

Her stomach dropped.

“The lake house.”

Adrian said nothing.

Emily looked back at the document.

Her father’s signature appeared at the bottom.

“What did he own?”

“Not the house.”

“Then what?”

“The land beneath what became the surrounding development.”

Emily’s mind raced.

The lake property Ethan wanted transferred to Margaret sat near one of the wealthiest redevelopment corridors in the region.

She had believed the purchase was sentimental.

A peaceful place for Margaret.

Had Ethan selected it intentionally?

Adrian continued.

“Thomas Carter and my employer’s predecessor were partners.”

“In what?”

“A large development venture.”

“What happened?”

“They accused each other of misconduct.”

“Who was right?”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“Depends which lawyer you ask.”

Emily folded the paper.

“And Ethan?”

“Ethan’s father worked for Blackwood.”

Emily stared at him.

Ethan rarely discussed his father.

David Walker died when Ethan was nineteen.

Margaret described him as a construction consultant whose small business failed.

“What did David Walker do?”

“He managed acquisitions for Blackwood.”

Michael whispered, “Jesus.”

Emily ignored him.

“Did my father know Ethan’s father?”

“Yes.”

“How well?”

“Very.”

Adrian let the word hang.

A memory surfaced.

Three months after Emily began dating Ethan, she had shown her father an old photograph.

Thomas stared at Ethan for a strangely long time.

Then he asked for Ethan’s last name again.

Walker.

Thomas had gone quiet.

Emily assumed he was being protective.

Two weeks later he died.

Her chest tightened.

“Did my father know who Ethan was?”

“I believe so.”

“Did Ethan know who I was before we met?”

Adrian did not answer.

That was an answer.

Emily stepped back.

Michael said, “Emily…”

She held up a hand.

“Why are you telling me this?”

Adrian finally lost his smile.

“Because Ethan made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“He started believing Blackwood worked for him.”

“And it doesn’t.”

“No.”

“What does Blackwood want?”

“The same thing it has wanted for fifteen years.”

Emily waited.

Adrian looked directly into her eyes.

“Control of the Carter properties.”

Emily laughed once.

“There are no Carter properties.”

“Yes, there are.”

“My company owns dozens of properties.”

“I’m not talking about Carter Ridge.”

Emily’s smile disappeared.

Adrian continued.

“Your father placed several assets into a private trust before his death.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Ask your estate attorney.”

“I’ve reviewed my father’s estate.”

“Have you reviewed the Carter Legacy Trust?”

Emily said nothing.

Because she had never heard the name.

Adrian stepped back.

“Tomorrow. Ten a.m.”

He placed an address on the table.

Then left.

Emily remained standing.

The diner suddenly felt too bright.

Michael whispered, “Did you know about a trust?”

“No.”

She called Jonathan immediately.

It took him twelve minutes to confirm something that should have been impossible.

The Carter Legacy Trust existed.

Created sixteen years earlier.

Thomas Carter, grantor.

Emily Carter, contingent beneficiary.

Current trustee information sealed through an independent fiduciary firm.

Emily listened in silence.

“Why didn’t I know?”

Jonathan sounded embarrassed.

“I’m searching archived estate files.”

“My father’s lawyer never told me?”

“There may have been conditions.”

“What conditions?”

“We need the trust document.”

Emily looked toward the window.

Adrian was gone.

So was the dark sedan that brought him.

She thought of Ethan.

Their wedding.

The company.

The house.

Seven years of marriage suddenly rearranged themselves like puzzle pieces on a table.

She remembered how interested Ethan had always been in her father’s history.

She remembered his excitement when she promoted him.

She remembered him encouraging her to buy the Greenwich lake house, insisting it was undervalued.

Had any of it been accidental?

Her phone rang.

Ethan.

Everyone looked at her.

Emily answered.

She did not speak first.

Ethan’s breathing filled the line.

Finally he said, “I heard you met Adrian.”

Emily closed her eyes.

So quickly.

Too quickly.

“You’re watching me.”

“No.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Emily, come home.”

“I am not with you.”

“Our home.”

“It stopped feeling like ours yesterday.”

Silence.

Then Ethan said quietly, “Adrian is manipulating you.”

“Did you know who my father was before we met?”

Another silence.

Longer.

Emily’s heart broke before he answered.

“Yes.”

The word barely sounded human.

Michael looked away.

Emily stared at nothing.

“How long?”

“Before the auction.”

“So meeting me was planned.”

“It started that way.”

The room tilted.

Rachel had entered the diner and stopped near the door.

She saw Emily’s face.

Emily continued.

“How long did it stay that way?”

Ethan’s voice cracked.

“Not long.”

She almost hated him more for sounding emotional.

“Don’t.”

“I fell in love with you.”

“You researched me.”

“Yes.”

“You approached me intentionally.”

“Yes.”

“You married me.”

“Because I loved you.”

“Did your mother tell you to?”

“No.”

“Did Blackwood?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Ethan exhaled.

“My father.”

Emily frowned.

“Your father was dead.”

“He left instructions.”

A strange chill moved through her.

“What instructions?”

“To get back what Thomas Carter stole from our family.”

Emily’s grip tightened.

“What did my father steal?”

“The future my father spent his life building.”

“Meaning what?”

“The Greenwich land.”

Emily remembered Adrian’s settlement document.

“Your father worked for Blackwood.”

“He was more than an employee.”

“What was he?”

Ethan hesitated.

Then said, “He was supposed to become a partner.”

“And my father stopped him?”

“My father died bankrupt because of Thomas Carter.”

Emily wanted to scream.

Instead she became quiet.

“And you married his daughter to get revenge?”

“No.”

“That is exactly what you just described.”

“I wanted information.”

“And then?”

“I met you.”

She hated that part of her still wanted to believe him.

Ethan continued.

“Emily, Blackwood is dangerous.”

“You worked with them.”

“I thought I could use them.”

“For what?”

“To restore what should have belonged to my family.”

“The lake house?”

“Not just the house.”

“What else?”

Ethan went silent.

Emily understood.

“The trust.”

“You know about it.”

“Barely.”

Ethan cursed under his breath.

“Listen to me. Do not meet Adrian tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“Because the trust doesn’t contain money.”

“What does it contain?”

Another silence.

Then Ethan whispered.

“Control.”

“Of what?”

“Land worth more than Carter Ridge.”

Emily felt cold.

“How much more?”

“Depending on approvals?”

May you like

He paused.

“Close to two hundred million dollars.”
