Chapter 3: The Ledger of Sins

The private study of the Hardway Manor smelled of aged leather, mahogany polish, and impending doom. Outside, the rain had begun to lash against the reinforced glass windows, turning the dark evening into a claustrophobic cage of shadows and flashing blue emergency lights.
Julian sat slumped in a high-backed leather armchair, his tuxedo jacket torn at the shoulder, his hair disheveled. Two security guards stood like iron statues on either side of the door. Across the massive oak desk sat Elena, calmly flipping through a thick leather-bound dossier.
"Embezzlement of corporate funds, falsification of offshore tax documents, and systematic asset stripping," Elena read aloud, her voice rhythmic and devoid of emotion. She looked up, her dark eyes pinning Julian to his seat. "Busy year, Julian."
"You can't prove any of that," Julian spat back, trying desperately to salvage a shred of his arrogant defiance, though his voice cracked miserably. "Those accounts... those shell companies were set up securely. Nobody outside my inner circle could trace them."
"Your inner circle?" Elena offered a faint, humorless smile. "You mean your crooked accountant, Marcus? The one who was arrested twenty minutes ago trying to board a private flight to the Caymans?"
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. His eyes bulged. "Marcus... you got to Marcus?"
"Marcus didn't need much 'getting to,'" Elena said smoothly, tossing a stack of printed bank statements onto the desk in front of him. "People who sell their loyalty for a percentage usually sell it for a slightly higher percentage when the FBI knocks on their door. He gave us the digital keys to every single transaction you made."
Julian stared at the papers. His entire life’s work—the fake empire he had spent years scheming, lying, and stealing to construct—was meticulously detailed in black and white right in front of him. Every bribe, every forged signature, every dollar siphoned from the Hardway trusts.
"Why?" Julian whispered, his head dropping into his hands as a dry, broken sob escaped his lips. "Why didn't you just divorce me quietly? Why go to all this trouble?"
Elena stood up, walking slowly around the desk until she was standing directly over him. The ambient light from the storm outside cast sharp, dramatic shadows across her face, accentuating the fierce, unyielding resolve in her features.
"Because a quiet divorce lets monsters like you walk away to prey on someone else," Elena said softly, leaning down so her voice was a lethal whisper in his ear. "I didn't just want to leave you, Julian. I wanted to make sure you never had the power to hurt another person ever again."
The heavy oak doors swung open, and two federal agents stepped into the study, their badges gleaming under the desk lamps.
