Chapter 6 - The Unlocked Study

Breaking into the private office of a billionaire is not a matter of stealth; it is a matter of timing.

At 7:00 PM, Richard hosted a private dinner in the formal dining room for two of his corporate attorneys and the local chief of police. It was a calculated display of normalcy, designed to cement the narrative that the incident the day before had been a minor domestic hiccup, already handled by private medicine.

Laughter and the clink of crystal glasses echoed from the ground floor dining hall.

Upstairs, the third floor was deserted.

Sophie acted as the lookout near the grand staircase, a walkie-talkie disguised as a toy bear clutched in her hand. I moved down the dim corridor to Richard’s private study, Leo strapped securely to my chest in a tactical baby carrier. I was never leaving him out of my sight again. Not in this house.

The heavy mahogany door to the study was locked, but Sophie had already stolen the master skeleton key from her father's dressing table while he was in the shower. I slipped the brass key into the lock, turned it, and pushed the door open.

The study smelled of rich leather, expensive tobacco, and old paper. Tall bookshelves stretched from floor to ceiling, surrounding a massive walnut desk. On the wall behind the desk hung an imposing, oil-painted portrait of Leopold Blackwood I—the stern, unforgiving patriarch whose fortune had built this empire.

I stepped behind the desk.

My heart was beating so hard I could hear it roaring in my ears. I reached up and carefully tilted the heavy gold frame of the portrait. Behind it, embedded directly into the reinforced brickwork, was a sleek steel panel housing a digital keypad and an optical biometric scanner.

*A fingerprint lock.*

I had known this was coming. Sophie had told me. And I had prepared.

Earlier that evening, while serving Richard his pre-dinner scotch in the library, I had intentionally "accidentally" dropped a silver pen near his chair. When he picked it up, his thumb had pressed firmly against the high-gloss lacquer of the pen’s casing. Before coming upstairs, I had lifted the latent print using graphite powder from an art pencil and a piece of high-adhesion packing tape.

It was a trick I had learned from my brother, an evidence technician for the Chicago PD. A crude, desperate trick, but in the era of early optical scanners, sometimes desperation was enough.

My hands shook as I smoothed the transparent tape over the glass surface of the biometric reader. I pressed my own thumb over the lifted print, holding my breath.

The scanner glowed red.

*Processing...*

A second passed. Two seconds. The study felt suffocatingly hot.

*Beep.*

The LED turned bright green. With a soft hydraulic hiss, the heavy steel door of the safe swung open three inches.

Inside was a high-tech console: a server rack blinking with blue activity lights, several stacks of hundred-dollar bills bound in bank straps, three foreign passports under Richard's name, and a primary hard drive labeled *CCTV MASTER ARCHIVE - UNEDITED.*

I pulled a high-capacity thumb drive from my pocket—something I had purchased that afternoon during a brief run to the pharmacy for Leo’s medicine. I plugged it into the server's USB port and navigated the terminal.

The interface loaded instantly.

I pulled up the unedited feed of Angle 4A, 4B, and 4C from yesterday afternoon.

What I saw on that raw, uncut video made my blood run cold.

The edited clip Sophie had seen on the foyer monitor began with Madeline already at the railing, releasing the baby. But the unedited master file showed the five minutes leading up to it.

Madeline hadn't walked to the balcony alone.

She had been dragged there.

Arthur Cole was holding her from behind, his massive arm locked across her throat, pinning her arms. Richard Blackwood himself was standing right next to them, holding the screaming baby Leo. Madeline was struggling wildly, her face bruised, her eyes rolling back in terror as Cole shoved an injection into her neck.

On the screen, Richard leaned down, whispered something into his drugged wife's ear, and then forced Leo into her numb, limp arms.

Then, with chilling, methodical precision, Richard took Madeline's limp wrists, hoisted her hands over the edge of the balcony, and peeled her fingers open one by one, letting his own son plunge into the empty air.

He hadn't just framed her.

Richard Blackwood had dropped the baby himself using his drugged wife’s paralyzed hands.

Suddenly, the walkie-talkie in my pocket buzzed with sharp static.

"Clara!" Sophie’s panicked voice crackled through the speaker. "He's coming up! The dinner ended early! Dad is in the elevator right now!"

I reached for the USB drive. The progress bar was at 92%.

*94%... 96%...*

The soft chime of the private third-floor elevator echoed from the end of the hall.
