Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH The black SUV did not enter the estate.

It remained beyond the gates for seven seconds.

Marcus counted every one.

Then it reversed.

Fast.

By the time the first patrol vehicle arrived, the SUV had disappeared.

“Plate?” Daniel asked.

Marcus shook his head.

“Covered.”

Vanessa stood beside the pool.

She looked almost relieved when the police officers approached.

Daniel noticed.

That made no sense.

A woman facing arrest should not look safer when police arrived unless she was more frightened of someone else.

Officer Nathan Reed separated everyone.

Sophie was examined by paramedics.

Her oxygen levels were normal.

Her lungs sounded clear.

Physically, she was safe.

Emotionally, she refused to release Daniel’s hand.

He stayed beside her.

Vanessa was questioned.

She changed her story twice.

First Sophie fell.

Then Sophie jumped.

Then Vanessa claimed Sophie had deliberately held her own face underwater during an emotional tantrum.

Marcus destroyed that version.

He had seen Vanessa’s hands.

More importantly—

his recording had captured Sophie screaming.

Dad! Dad!

And Vanessa saying:

Stop fighting.

Vanessa was arrested.

As officers led her away, she looked directly at Daniel.

“You need me.”

Daniel said nothing.

“If you want Rachel alive, you need me.”

Officer Reed stopped.

Daniel stood.

“What did you say?”

Vanessa smiled.

That smile was different from the one Daniel knew.

No warmth.

No affection.

No pretense.

“Now you’re listening.”

Daniel lunged forward.

Marcus stopped him.

“Sir.”

“WHERE IS SHE?”

Vanessa was pushed toward the patrol vehicle.

“Ask your bodyguard.”

Daniel froze.

Marcus did too.

Vanessa laughed.

“Ask Marcus what happened on October seventeenth.”

Then the patrol door closed.

Daniel slowly turned.

Marcus’s expression had changed.

“What happened October seventeenth?”

Marcus said nothing.

“Marcus.”

Sophie looked between them.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Tell me.”

Marcus stared at the departing police car.

“October seventeenth was the night before Rachel disappeared.”

Daniel’s heart began pounding.

“I know.”

Marcus swallowed.

“She called me.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

“At 11:43 p.m.”

“Why?”

“She asked me to meet her.”

Daniel felt betrayed before he even knew the reason.

“You never told me.”

“She made me promise.”

“Rachel has been missing eleven months!”

“I know.”

“And you kept something from me?”

Marcus’s expression hardened with guilt.

“I thought keeping that promise was protecting you.”

“From what?”

Marcus looked toward Sophie.

Daniel understood.

“Inside.”

They returned to the mansion.

Sophie was taken upstairs by Daniel’s sister, Claire, who had arrived after receiving Marcus’s emergency call.

Daniel and Marcus entered the study.

Daniel closed the door.

“Start talking.”

Marcus removed a key from around his neck.

Small.

Brass.

Daniel had never seen it.

“Rachel gave me this.”

“What does it open?”

“A storage locker.”

“Where?”

“Downtown.”

Daniel stared.

“You knew Rachel had a storage locker?”

“No. Not until that night.”

Marcus placed the key on the desk.

“She was scared.”

Daniel’s anger weakened.

Rachel was almost impossible to frighten.

She had been a federal prosecutor before leaving public service to help manage the Cole Foundation.

“What did she say?”

“She told me she discovered something inside the foundation’s international relief accounts.”

“What?”

“She wouldn’t say.”

“Why call you?”

“Because she didn’t trust anyone connected to the foundation.”

Daniel stopped.

“I ran the foundation.”

Marcus looked at him.

“I know.”

Daniel understood the implication.

“She didn’t trust me?”

“She trusted you as her husband.”

Marcus paused.

“She didn’t trust the people around you.”

Daniel thought of executives.

Attorneys.

Security contractors.

Donors.

Friends.

Vanessa.

“When did Vanessa meet Rachel?”

Marcus looked surprised.

“Vanessa said they never met.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Marcus thought.

Then his face changed.

“Charity gala.”

“When?”

“Two weeks before Rachel disappeared.”

Daniel felt sick.

Vanessa had lied.

Again.

They went to the storage facility that night with Detective Reed.

Locker 317.

Marcus inserted Rachel’s key.

The metal door rolled upward.

Inside sat three boxes.

A laptop.

A red leather notebook.

And photographs.

Daniel approached.

The first photograph showed Rachel entering a restaurant.

The second showed Vanessa.

The third showed both women sitting together.

Daniel stared.

On the back Rachel had written:

VANESSA STERLING — NOT WHO SHE CLAIMS.

Daniel opened the notebook.

Names.

Dates.

Transfers.

Then one phrase appeared repeatedly.

PROJECT ORPHEUS.

Reed looked over his shoulder.

“What is that?”

Daniel shook his head.

Then he turned another page.

A photograph fell out.

Sophie.

Taken outside her school.

Daniel’s blood went cold.

Another photograph.

Daniel leaving his office.

Another.

Rachel.

Another.

Marcus.

Someone had been watching the entire family.

Daniel reached the final page.

Rachel’s handwriting became hurried.

If something happens to me, Daniel must not search through official channels. Someone inside law enforcement is involved.

Reed stared at the sentence.

Daniel slowly looked at him.

Reed stepped backward.

“I didn’t know.”

Daniel said nothing.

Then he noticed something beneath the notebook.

A flash drive.

Rachel had taped a note to it.

Three words.

FOR SOPHIE SOMEDAY.

Daniel inserted it into the laptop.

One video file.

He clicked.

Rachel appeared onscreen.

Alive.

Beautiful.

Terrified.

“Daniel…”

Her voice broke.

Daniel stopped breathing.

“If you’re watching this, something happened before I could come home.”

He touched the screen.

“Rachel.”

She continued.

“Whatever they tell you, do not believe I left you.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I would never leave Sophie.”

A tear rolled down his face.

Rachel looked directly into the camera.

“And Daniel…”

She hesitated.

“There’s something you need to know about Vanessa Sterling.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

Rachel leaned closer.

“She isn’t trying to get into our family.”

A pause.

“She was already part of what happened before we ever met her.”

The video abruptly ended.

Daniel stared at the black screen.

Then the laptop displayed something else.

A notification.

REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.

Marcus saw it.

“Disconnect it.”

Too late.

The storage facility lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A gunshot cracked somewhere outside.

Reed reached for his weapon.

Daniel dropped behind a box.

Marcus moved toward the door.

Another shot.

Then silence.

Daniel’s phone illuminated.

One text message.

Unknown number.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET YOUR WIFE STAY DEAD.

Daniel stared at the words.

His fear disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

Determination.

Rachel had left him a trail.

Someone was terrified he might follow it.

That meant one thing.

May you like

The trail still led somewhere.

And Daniel Cole was going to follow it to the end.
