Chapter 7 - A King’s Wrath

The armored convoy did not head south on the interstate; they took the subterranean service tunnels beneath the Loop, cutting beneath the city’s belly to avoid the police checkpoints that were already beginning to swarm the downtown district in response to the explosion at Cavali Tower.

Inside the secondary safehouse located in an abandoned underground subterranean rail hub beneath West Fulton, the convoy halted for precisely twelve minutes.

Dante stood in the center of the mobile armory, stripping off his ruined dress shirt. His broad, muscular torso was marked by deep purple bruising from the tackle in the hallway, alongside jagged scars from past turf wars. A field medic worked frantically, disinfecting a slice along his shoulder blade before taping it closed with butterfly bandages.

Serena stood two feet away. She had refused to let the medics usher her into a private room. Instead, she had discarded her torn ivory robe, pulling on a black tactical combat turtleneck, dark cargo trousers, and heavy laced boots provided by the armory staff. She stood watching the medic tend to Dante’s back, her hazel eyes dark with an agonizing intensity.

When the medic finished, Dante waved him away.

The room cleared, leaving only Dante and Serena under the harsh overhead fluorescent tube.

Dante reached for a fresh black tactical vest, but before he could slide it over his head, Serena stepped forward. Her cold, delicate fingers touched the warm skin over his ribs, tracing the heavy bruising with a reverent, trembling gentleness.

"You could have died tonight," she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the hum of the generators. "Because of my family. Because of my father’s greed."

Dante dropped the vest onto the metal table. He reached out, his large hands closing gently around her slender waist, pulling her against his bare chest until she could feel the steady, heavy beat of his heart.

"I didn't die," Dante said softly. "Because my wife spent three years living in hell just to keep me breathing."

Tears welled in Serena’s eyes again, but she blinked them back with fierce defiance. "I hated every second of it, Dante. Every time you walked away from my door... every time I had to pretend you meant nothing to me... it felt like I was poisoning my own soul."

Dante leaned down, resting his forehead against hers, his breath warm against her lips. "The divorce papers are ashes on the fifty-fourth floor, Serena. You are never leaving me. Do you hear me? Even if you wanted to walk away tomorrow, I would tear this city apart brick by brick to find you."

"I am never leaving you," she vowed, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck, pressing her face into the curve of his throat. "I will stand beside you until the day they put us both in the ground."

Dante tightened his grip around her, closing his eyes, letting the absolute certainty of her words wash over him. For three years, he had fought his wars with a hollow chest, believing that the empire he was building was nothing more than an expensive monument to his own loneliness.

Now, he was whole.

And a whole Dante Cavali was the most dangerous creature in North America.

He released her, pulled on the reinforced tactical vest, and cinched the velcro straps tight. He picked up a customized combat shotgun, racking a heavy 12-gauge slug into the chamber, and slid two spare Glock magazines into the pouches across his chest.

"Leo!" Dante barked toward the doorway.

Leo Varga stepped into the armory, fully kitted in black tactical gear, carrying a suppressed sniper rifle. "The assault team is assembled, Dante. Twenty-four men. Heavy breaching gear, thermobaric charges, and night vision. The perimeter at Pier 19 is surrounded. Vincent has no idea we're within ten miles of him."

"Where is Patricia?" Dante asked.

"Secured in the holding cell downstairs under armed guard," Leo reported. "She gave up the access codes to the pier's security gate. Vincent’s private radio frequency is compromised."

Dante turned to Serena, his eyes dark with an unholy resolve. "Stay with the command vehicle, Serena. You don't need to see what I'm going to do to your father."

Serena looked at him, her chin lifting with that same unbreakable iron he had seen in the sunroom.

"He sold me to you like an assassin, Dante," she said, her voice dropping into a chilling, absolute coldness. "He sent men to burn your home and murder you in your sleep. He isn't my father anymore. He’s just a rabid dog that needs to be put down."

She picked up the Glock from the table, checked the slide with seasoned efficiency, and holstered it at her hip.

"I’m coming with you."

Dante stared at her for three seconds. Then, a slow, terrifying smile spread across his face.

"Give her a tactical vest and an ear-piece, Leo," Dante commanded. "The Queen rides with us."
