Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

Every head in the ballroom whipped toward the double mahogany doors at the entrance of the Grand Crystal Ballroom.

Standing in the doorway was a tall, middle-aged man in a dark charcoal suit, his graying hair cropped close, holding a thick leather briefcase. Flanking him were two men in federal law enforcement jackets, their badges glinting under the crystal chandeliers.

The man in the charcoal suit was Marcus Sterling.

Senior Managing Partner of Sterling, Holt & Associates—and the chief legal counsel for Vanguard Logistics. But more importantly, he was the former estate attorney for Margaret’s late husband, Charles Collins.

Margaret gasped, her hand flying to her throat. “Marcus? What... what is this circus? Who authorized you to bring police into my son’s wedding?”

Marcus walked down the center aisle, his dress shoes clicking methodically against the parquet floor. He didn't look at Daniel. He didn't look at the stunned guests. He looked directly at Margaret with cold, exhausted familiarity.

“Nobody authorized a circus, Margaret,” Marcus said, stopping at the edge of the dance floor. “They authorized a warrant.”

He opened his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents, and turned toward Arthur Vance.

“Arthur,” Marcus said, nodding to our CEO. “At five o’clock this evening, Emma contacted my office and submitted digital forensic copies of unauthorized financial transfers originating from Daniel Collins’s terminal. We cross-referenced those logs with the state regulatory commission and the maritime registry.”

Marcus turned back to face Daniel, whose face had gone from pale to an ashen, sickly gray.

“Daniel Collins,” Marcus declared, his voice echoing through the silent hall, “you are officially under investigation by the Massachusetts Financial Crimes Task Force for grand larceny, wire fraud, and corporate espionage. The preliminary injunction halting all domestic and international accounts associated with Triton Marine was signed by Judge Thornton forty minutes ago.”

Daniel collapsed into a nearby chair, knocking over a crystal vase filled with white roses. Water and crushed petals spilled across the linen tablecloth and soaked into the floor. He buried his face in his hands, his shoulders heaving with ragged, terrified sobs.

“This is an outrage!” Margaret screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek that caused guests in the front rows to recoil. “This is a setup! That girl orchestrated this to destroy us! Charles would have had you disbarred for this, Marcus! Charles would have ruined you!”

“Charles died penniless because of your vanity, Margaret,” Marcus said, his voice entirely devoid of pity. “I spent ten years trying to keep his memory intact while you drained his trust funds, bought five-hundred-thousand-dollar horses you couldn't afford, and pushed your son into criminal schemes to maintain a social standing you lost twenty years ago.”

Marcus turned to the two federal agents standing at the perimeter.

“Officers,” Marcus said calmly. “The subject has attempted to access foreign shell accounts using corporate authorization codes. The servers are secured at Vanguard headquarters. You may proceed.”

One of the agents stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt.

The click of the steel cuffs echoed through the crystal ballroom, sharp and final. Daniel didn’t fight. He offered no resistance as the agent pulled his arms behind his back, clicking the metal around his wrists. He was shaking violently, his designer tuxedo rumpled, his hair disheveled, reduced to a hollow, broken shell of the charming man who had promised to love me forever.

The room watched in horrified, absolute silence as Daniel Collins, the golden boy of the Boston elite, was led out of his own wedding reception in chains.
