Chapter 6 - WITNESS / EVIDENCE

Four hours later, the descent began.
The captain’s voice crackled through the intercom with mechanical calm: *"Cabin crew, prepare for arrival. Italian authorities have requested an operational hold upon gate arrival. All passengers are instructed to remain seated until local law enforcement has cleared the aircraft."*
A ripple of nervous murmurs swept through the economy cabin behind us. But in the first-class suite, the air was dead silent.
Leo was awake now, sitting contentedly on Julian’s lap, gnawing softly on a silicone teething ring Vance had retrieved from Julian’s carry-on. Maya sat next to me, her hair neatly brushed, holding my hand so tightly her knuckles were white.
"Mommy, are the bad men outside?" Maya whispered.
"No, baby," I lied, swallowing the metallic taste of terror. "Just the airport police. Mr. Julian is going to help us."
Julian glanced down at her, his expression softening for a fraction of a second. "No one is touching you, Maya. I give you my word."
On the fold-out tray table between our seats lay the orange-and-black USB drive.
Over the last two hours, Vance had plugged the drive into his encrypted field laptop. What we saw had turned my stomach into liquid lead. It was all there: three years of encrypted manifests, time-stamped surveillance stills from the Columbus freight yards, and offshore wire transfers detailing payments of $45,000 every month directly into a shell account under Richard’s name.
More horrifying was a folder labeled *PROJECT CADENCE*.
Inside was a series of text messages sent between Richard and an unregistered burner phone on Monday evening:
> **UNKNOWN:** *She’s leaving the Hyatt Regency at 0400. Driving the black E-Class. Northbound 71.*
> **RICHARD:** *Hauler 402 is staged at mile marker 112. Driver knows what to do. Clean impact.*
> **UNKNOWN:** *No survivors. Confirm logs are scrubbed.*
> **RICHARD:** *Scrubbing now.*
"That's first-degree premeditated murder," Vance had said, his voice trembling with rage as he saved the mirror image of the drive to three separate encrypted servers. "This isn't just evidence. This is an open-and-shut death penalty case in the Southern District of Ohio."
Now, the landing gear deployed with a heavy, mechanical thud that reverberated through the fuselage. The Boeing 777 hit the runway of Rome Fiumicino with a shudder, the reverse thrusters roaring like caged beasts as the Italian tarmac blurred past the windows.
The plane taxied, but it didn't pull into the terminal gate.
Instead, it veered off onto a remote auxiliary taxiway, stopping hundreds of yards away from the main terminal. Outside the window, through the gray morning drizzle of Rome, blue flashing lights painted the tarmac in rhythmic pulses.
Four vehicles from the *Polizia di Frontiera* were parked in a half-moon blockade around the mobile staircase being pushed toward the forward door. Behind them sat two unmarked black Mercedes vans with tinted windows.
"They're here for me," I whispered, my chest tightening until I couldn't draw a breath.
"Stay seated, Sarah," Julian ordered. His voice was completely steady. He fastened Leo into an ergonomic chest carrier strapped tightly against his suit jacket. "Vance, open the door."
The forward cabin door unsealed with a hiss of pressurized air. The damp, chilly Roman morning flooded into the plane.
Two Italian federal officers in dark berets and sidearms entered the cabin first, followed by a sharp-featured man in a beige trench coat holding a laminated document. Behind them was an American consular officer with a laminated badge swinging from his neck.
"Sarah Mitchell?" the man in the trench coat demanded in English, his accent thick. "I am Inspector Rossi, Polizia di Frontiera. You are subject to an international provisional arrest warrant issued by Interpol Washington. Step forward immediately."
The economy passengers peered through the open curtain, gasping as the armed officers moved down the aisle toward me.
I gripped Maya’s hand. My heart was pounding so violently I felt like I was going to black out.
"Inspector Rossi," a voice boomed from the front of the cabin.
Julian Thorne stepped into the center aisle. He stood at his full height, his broad frame completely blocking the officers’ path to me and Maya. With Leo strapped safely to his chest, he exuded an aura of untouchable, aristocratic power.
"Mr. Thorne?" The American consular officer pushed past the Italian inspector, his eyes wide with shock. "Mr. Thorne, what are you doing on this flight? Your office told the State Department you were on a private transport to Zurich!"
"Ambassador Sterling knows exactly why I am on this flight, David," Julian said, his voice cutting like a razor. "And you are currently trespassing on an aircraft chartered by an American entity while interfering with an active federal witness."
Inspector Rossi frowned, stepping around Julian. "Signore, this woman is wanted for aggravated domestic assault and kidnapping. We have an international obligation—"
"This woman is the primary federal whistleblower in the vehicular assassination of my wife, Elena Thorne," Julian said, his words dropping like mortar shells in the quiet cabin.
Rossi stopped dead in his tracks. The American consular official went paper-white.
"What?" the consular official choked out.
Julian tapped the tablet held by Vance, who held the screen inches from the consular officer's face.
"On this screen is a digital transmission signed sixty seconds ago by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio and the Deputy Attorney General," Julian stated coldly. "The Red Notice against Sarah Mitchell has been formally vacated as fraudulent. A federal arrest warrant has just been issued for Richard Mitchell for conspiracy to commit murder, witness tampering, and false reporting."
Julian took a step closer to the Italian inspector, his eyes boring into the man’s soul.

"Sarah Mitchell and her daughter are under emergency diplomatic protection of the United States Embassy. If you lay a single finger on her, Inspector, you will answer directly to the Prime Minister's office before sunset. Now, stand aside and let this family disembark."
