Chapter 5 - The Price of Silence

Daniel collapsed back against the wall, sliding down until his knees hit the floorboards with a dull thud. His Caribbean shopping bag lay crumpled beside him. The wooden turtle with its painted yellow flowers rested against the base of the radiator, cheap and absurd in the middle of our ruined lives.

“No…” he sobbed, burying his face in his hands. “No, no, God, no…”

I felt no pity for him. The well of empathy I had carried for twelve years—the endless reservoir of patience, forgiveness, and soft-spoken comfort—was bone dry. There was nothing left inside me for Daniel Vance except a cold, crystalline resolve.

“Why St. Lucia, Daniel?” I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. “If this was just about signing documents and retrieving your fraud file, why were you at an infinity pool sipping champagne? Why was she posting photos of you kissing her?”

Daniel looked up, his face wet with tears, snot running down his upper lip. He looked pathetic. The polished, charismatic developer who commanded boardroom tables had vanished, leaving behind the small, terrified boy he had always been underneath the suits.

“She… she made it a condition,” he stammered.

“What kind of condition?”

“The documents had to be executed under Saint Lucian maritime and international business law,” he said, his voice trembling. “To shelter the assets from her father’s subpoena. But Celeste… she didn’t just want the corporate signatures, Grace. She wanted… she wanted to humiliate you. She wanted to prove that she owned me.”

I stared at him, disgusted beyond words.

“She told me that if I didn't play along—if I didn't stay at the villa with her, if I didn't act like her partner in every sense of the word—she would cancel the transfer and call the U.S. Attorney,” Daniel choked out. “Every time I reached for my phone to check on you, she threatened to send the files. She took my phone on Tuesday night, Grace! She locked it in the villa safe! She said: *‘Your old life is over, Daniel. You belong to Morgan Capital now. Act like it.’*”

“And you did,” I said.

“I was terrified!”

“No, Daniel,” Evelyn interrupted, her voice ringing like a bronze bell through the foyer. “You weren't just terrified. You were flattered.”

Daniel went rigid.

“I know you, Daniel,” Evelyn said, stepping forward until she stood directly over her weeping son. “You have spent your entire life craving the approval of people who look down on you. Arthur Morgan treated you like an errand boy, and when his daughter offered you a seat at the table of international high finance, you were intoxicated by it. You convinced yourself that you were a tragic hero making a noble sacrifice for your family, when in reality, you were enjoying every second of being fought over by two women.”

Evelyn reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a heavy manila envelope, sealed with red wax.

“What is that?” Daniel asked, staring at the wax seal with mounting dread.

May you like

“This,” Evelyn said, “is the reason Celeste Morgan will never bother you again. And it is the reason you have exactly forty-eight hours to vacate this property.”
