Chapter 8 - Green Gardens and Fresh WindsThe bright weekend sunlight streamed through the large glass windows, casting a warm golden glow over the spacious living room of our new home. The damp smell of buried secrets was gone, and there were no longer hidden wall safes or footsteps creeping behind our backs. Every corner of the house was now filled with laughter and peace.

Lily was sitting cross-legged on the soft furry rug in the corner of the room, eagerly coloring in a brand-new sketchbook Aunt Mai had given her. The medical bracelet still rested neatly on her small wrist as a gentle reminder of caution, rather than a symbol of fear or obsession.

From the kitchen, the cozy aroma of buttermilk pancakes and chamomile tea filled the air. Aunt Mai was busy arranging breakfast on the oak dining table, humming an old tune as she worked.

I stepped in from the balcony, still holding the phone I had just used to disconnect from the law office. That final phone call had officially wrapped up all legal procedures. Anna’s three-million-dollar estate, along with the entire real estate portfolio, had been transferred entirely to an independent trust fund with me as the sole representative. There were no more disputes, no more of Evelyn’s tyrannical shadow, and no more of Michael’s cowardly betrayal.

"You look a lot more at ease, Daniel," Aunt Mai turned around, smiling as she wiped her hands on her apron when she saw the expression on my face. "More good news from the court?"

"Everything is settled, Mai," I let out a deep breath, feeling as though tons of heavy rocks that had weighed on my chest for two years had finally been completely lifted. "Lily’s account is safely sealed. No one, not creditors nor investigative agencies, can ever touch it again."

Hearing our voices, Lily raised her head, her big round eyes sparkling with excitement. She trotted over to me, wrapping her arms tightly around my leg.

"Daddy, you promised to take me to the riverbank park to fly kites today!"

I bent down, scooping her up high into the air, making Lily burst into delighted giggles.

"Of course Daddy remembers. As soon as we finish breakfast, the two of us will pack the biggest superhero kite and head to the park. Aunt Mai is coming too, right?"

"Yay! To the park!" Lily cheered, wrapping her arms tightly around my neck.

Looking at my daughter’s innocent and radiant smile, an indescribable emotion tightened my chest. How many nights had I wondered if I could protect her from this trap-filled world? How many times had I helplessly watched her almost fall because of the very people called family? But now, the storm had truly passed. We had fought and won through truth and courage.
