Chapter 4 - The Carriage House

At eight o'clock the following morning, Madeline returned to the Buckhead estate. She didn't arrive alone.

Three black SUVs pulled into the circular cobblestone driveway, parking directly behind Jeffrey’s vintage Aston Martin. Out stepped Madeline, accompanied by four uniformed sheriff’s deputies and a private moving crew.

The heavy front doors swung open almost immediately. Noelle stepped onto the portico, dressed in an immaculate cream-colored morning gown, her pearls gleaming in the morning light. Behind her stood Cynthia, clutching Austin on her hip, her face flushed with indignation.

“What is the meaning of this circus?” Noelle snapped, her voice carrying across the courtyard. “Madeline, have you completely lost your mind? The caterers are arriving in two hours! We have floral arrangements coming from New York for the pre-gala reception!”

Madeline walked up the stone steps, her black trench coat billowing slightly in the cold morning wind. Her face was an emotionless mask of marble.

“Deputy Miller,” Madeline said, gesturing to the officer beside her. “This is the property.”

The deputy, a burly man with a no-nonsense stare, held up a court-stamped document. “Noelle Thorne? Jeffrey Thorne? We are executing an emergency writ of assistance for the retrieval of personal property, and a civil preservation order regarding corporate assets.”

Cynthia’s eyes widened with sudden panic. “Civil order? What are you talking about? Jeffrey! Jeffrey, get down here!”

Jeffrey stumbled out the front doors, adjusting his tie, smelling faintly of expensive scotch from the night before. His face darkened when he saw the deputies.

“Madeline, what are you doing?” Jeffrey hissed, stepping toward her. “Are you trying to ruin me? I told you, Liam’s situation is a family matter! You can’t bring the police to my house!”

“It’s not your house, Jeffrey,” Madeline said calmly. “The deed to this property is held under the Madeline Vance Revocable Living Trust. I purchased it four years ago before our wedding. You are merely an authorized occupant.”

Noelle let out a high-pitched, incredulous laugh. “Authorized occupant? My great-grandfather owned this land before the Civil War, you ungrateful little—!”

“And your late husband mortgaged it to the hilt to cover his gambling debts,” Madeline interrupted, slicing through Noelle’s sentence with lethal precision. “I bought out the note from SunTrust Bank. I hold the mortgage, Noelle. And as of eight o'clock this morning, you have officially defaulted on your zero-dollar occupancy lease due to unauthorized structural modifications.”

“What modifications?” Jeffrey yelled, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson.

Madeline turned her gaze directly into Jeffrey’s eyes. “The lock you installed on the outside of the pantry door under the stairs.”

The entire courtyard fell deathly silent.

Jeffrey went entirely pale. Cynthia took an involuntary half-step backward, her hand tightening around Austin’s linen shirt.

Madeline had spent the pre-dawn hours reviewing the interior architectural blueprints of the mansion alongside the security logs provided by the former housekeeper, who had reached out to Madeline’s attorneys the moment she heard Madeline was back in the country. The former housekeeper, Maria, had been fired six months ago by Cynthia for leaving an extra plate of food outside the pantry.

“Did you think Maria burned her phone records, Jeffrey?” Madeline whispered, taking a single, measured step toward him. “Did you think no one would ever find the photographs of the two-by-four wooden latch you bolted onto the outside of that four-by-four storage closet? The one where Liam was kept whenever your investors came over for dinner?”

Noelle’s hands began to shake, her pearls clicking together. “That boy… that boy screamed like a lunatic! He was disturbing our social standing!”

“He was four years old!” Madeline’s voice cracked the stillness like a gunshot. The deputies behind her shifted their weight, their expressions hardening into absolute disgust as they looked at Jeffrey. “He was four years old, and you starved him in the dark while you fed this woman’s child three-milk cake on silver platters!”

Cynthia opened her mouth, her voice shrill and desperate. “You don't have proof of that! Jeffrey, tell them she doesn't have proof!”

Madeline looked at Cynthia with unadulterated contempt. “I don't need to prove anything to you, Cynthia. But you have thirty minutes to take your personal belongings and leave my house. If you are still on this property at eight-thirty-one, the deputies will arrest you for criminal trespassing.”

“Jeffrey, do something!” Cynthia shrieked, tugging at Jeffrey’s sleeve. “We have the gala tonight! My dress is inside! My jewelry!”

Jeffrey reached out to grab Madeline’s arm. “Madeline, let’s talk inside. Please. Just between us. We can settle this. I’ll apologize. We’ll get Liam the best doctors in Switzerland, I swear to God! Just don’t do this today. The German deal… the entire future of the company depends on tonight!”

Madeline looked down at his hand on her sleeve as if a cockroach had landed on her coat.

Deputy Miller immediately stepped between them, his hand resting firmly on his service weapon. “Step back, Mr. Thorne. Do not touch her.”

Madeline looked at Jeffrey, her voice cold, clear, and utterly devoid of pity.

“Make sure you look your best tonight, Jeffrey,” she said. “The whole world will be watching.”
