Chapter 6 — Someone Else Entered the Room

Ethan did not allow anyone to leave the mansion until they understood what had happened to the blue envelope, but he also refused to turn the dinner into a theatrical interrogation, so he moved Lily and Eleanor into the library while Martin contacted Rachel and the household security director, Mara Brooks. Mara had been employed by the family for seven years, and Ethan suddenly remembered seeing her near the service corridor when he arrived home, watching Vanessa cross the foyer with a look Ethan had interpreted as ordinary professional attention.

Mara entered carrying a tablet and looked uncomfortable before anyone asked a question, which immediately told Ethan she knew something. She explained that the hidden archive had an old electronic lock added during a security renovation five years earlier, and although Eleanor usually used a physical key, the interior release could be disabled for ninety seconds through the household system during a fire or intrusion drill.

“Not three hours,” Ethan said.

“No,” Mara replied, and then admitted that someone had placed the system into maintenance mode at 5:47 p.m., allowing the override to remain active indefinitely. The command came from Vanessa’s household administrator profile.

Vanessa did not deny using the override. She said she had intended to keep Eleanor inside for ten minutes while she retrieved the signing packet, removed the Northstar schedule, and canceled the transfer before Ethan saw it, because by then she understood Eleanor would expose everything unless Vanessa could undo the plan herself.

“You could have opened the door first,” Lily said from beside Eleanor, and the simplicity of the statement stripped away every complicated justification Vanessa had built. Vanessa looked at her and whispered, “Yes.”

Mara then admitted that she saw Vanessa leave the library at 5:51 carrying nothing, heard pounding from behind the wall, and asked whether something was wrong. Vanessa told her Eleanor had suffered another disorientation episode and instructed her not to open the archive because Eleanor might become agitated; Mara knew about the previous medication incident, so the explanation was plausible enough to delay her response.

Mara’s motive for silence was not loyalty to Vanessa alone. Her employment included medical insurance for her husband, who had recently undergone heart surgery, and Vanessa controlled household staffing while Ethan traveled; when Mara challenged the order a second time, Vanessa told her, “Don’t make me replace you tonight,” a statement Mara interpreted as a threat to her job.

“I should have opened it anyway,” Mara said, refusing to turn fear into innocence. She had failed Eleanor, though differently from Vanessa, and the distinction mattered because the story did not need everyone to become an equal conspirator simply because they had made selfish choices under pressure.

Mara had, however, done one thing Vanessa did not know. At 6:04, she exported the access log to her private incident folder because the prolonged maintenance state violated security protocol, which preserved proof that Vanessa had disabled the release and that no one reopened the door until Ethan broke it.

The log also showed another entry.

At 6:22, someone entered the library through the service corridor using Martin Mercer’s guest access code.

Everyone turned toward Martin.

Martin went pale, then swore he had been at the airport with Ethan at 6:22, which Ethan confirmed immediately. Mara explained that Martin’s code had been issued temporarily to a contractor during renovations months earlier and should have been deleted, meaning the entry did not prove Martin personally entered the room.

Video from the corridor camera showed a man wearing a catering jacket and cap stepping into the library for thirty-four seconds before leaving with something flat beneath his jacket. The image was partially obscured because party decorations blocked the camera, but Vanessa recognized the man’s gait before anyone saw his face.

“Adrian.”

That changed the missing-envelope question completely. Vanessa had not removed Rachel’s emails from the archive after locking Eleanor inside; Adrian had entered using an obsolete access code he had apparently obtained through the renovation contractor he hired for one of the foundation’s housing projects.

Vanessa stared at the paused image and understood that the man she believed was helping her create independence had been protecting himself from her. Adrian knew Eleanor possessed evidence linking Northstar to Vela, and rather than trusting Vanessa to manage the crisis, he had come into the mansion while the family prepared dinner and stolen the documents.

Rachel answered Ethan’s call minutes later and confirmed she had sent copies of the suspicious email chain to Eleanor after Vanessa’s misleading reply. She also revealed that Adrian had called her that afternoon trying to persuade her that the Vela connection was merely a naming coincidence.

The evidence was expanding, but it did not reduce Vanessa’s responsibility; it simply showed that her plan had attracted another person whose fear was financial rather than emotional. Adrian wanted his fee and freedom from exposure, Mara wanted to protect her employment, Eleanor wanted to protect the trust, Vanessa wanted permanent security, and Ethan wanted to believe the systems around him would function without his attention.

Then Rachel said something that made Ethan grip the phone more tightly.

“I sent you the same warning yesterday, Ethan.”
