Chapter 8 - The Ambush at Sunset Ridge

"Marcus! Pick up the damn phone!" Daniel roared into the hands-free receiver as his Lincoln Navigator tore out of the parking deck, running a red light onto West 9th Street and accelerating toward the interstate.

The phone rang three times, four times, then clicked.

"Danny," Marcus’s voice was strained, breathless, punctuated by the unmistakable, violent *CRACK-CRACK-CRACK* of rifle fire echoing in the background.

"Marcus! Get him out of there!" Daniel screamed, dodging a semi-truck as he merged onto the freeway at ninety miles an hour.

"We're pinned in the master bedroom!" Marcus grunted. A heavy blast—the roar of Marcus's 12-gauge shotgun—reverberated through the receiver, followed by the sound of splintering wood and shattering glass. "They came up through the tree line! Three shooters! Heavy body armor, suppressed carbines!"

"Where is Evan?"

"He's in the crawlspace under the floorboards! He's safe for now, but these bastards are trying to set fire to the porch!" Another burst of automatic fire shredded the background. Marcus let out a sharp hiss of pain.

"Marcus! Were you hit?"

"Grazed the shoulder! I'm fine, but I'm down to six shells, Danny! You need to hurry!"

"I'm fifteen minutes out! Hold the line, Marcus! Do not let them touch him!"

Daniel slammed the accelerator to the floorboards. The Navigator’s V8 engine roared, pushing past one hundred miles per hour as the wet pavement of Route 2 blurred beneath the tires. The sleet had turned into a blinding wall of white, but Daniel didn't lift his foot. He didn't care about state troopers, he didn't care about the blown headlight whistling violently in the wind. The only thing that existed was the bluffs of Vermilion and the boy hiding in the dark beneath the floorboards.

Fourteen agonizing minutes later, Daniel turned off the highway, the SUV's tires fishtailing as he rocketed down the winding dirt road through the pine forest.

Through the trees, black smoke was already billowing into the gray sky.

Daniel crested the final rise. The cedar cabin's front porch was engulfed in flames. A black Dodge Ram was parked sideways across the gravel turnaround, doors flung open. Two gunmen in tactical gear were firing into the second-story windows, while a third man was preparing a can of gasoline near the front steps.

Daniel didn't hit the brakes.

He gripped the steering wheel with white knuckles, aimed the heavy steel bumper of his Lincoln Navigator directly at the Dodge Ram, and floored the engine.

*BOOM!*

The collision sounded like an artillery shell detonating. The Navigator slammed into the side of the truck at sixty miles an hour, rolling the heavy pickup onto its side and crushing the man with the gasoline can beneath two tons of twisted steel.

The airbag exploded into Daniel’s face with a cloud of white powder, dazing him for half a second. But the adrenaline surged like pure electricity. He kicked open his bent driver door, pulled a Glock 19 from the glove compartment, and rolled out onto the gravel.

One of the remaining shooters turned around, his rifle raising. Daniel fired three times through the smoke. The rounds punched through the shooter’s chest, dropping him instantly onto the pine needles.

The final gunman bolted toward the woods, panic overtaking his discipline. From the second-story window of the cabin, the heavy roar of Marcus’s Ithaca shotgun erupted. The fleeing shooter dropped into the snow and didn't move again.

Silence descended over the bluffs, broken only by the crackle of the burning porch.

"MARCUS!" Daniel shouted, coughing against the acrid smoke as he sprinted toward the side entrance of the cabin.

"Here!" Marcus stumbled out of the side door, his left arm drenched in blood, but his right hand still firmly gripping the smoking shotgun. "Down the hall! The crawlspace!"

Daniel shoved through the smoke-filled corridor, tearing open the heavy oak hatch in the bedroom floor.

"Evan! EVAN!"

A small, soot-covered face emerged from the darkness. Evan was clutching the blue backpack to his chest, his eyes wide as dinner plates, trembling with sheer terror.

Daniel reached down, hooked his hands beneath the boy’s arms, and yanked him up into the room, pulling him against his chest with crushing force. "I've got you. I've got you, son. You're okay."

Evan wrapped his arms around Daniel’s neck, burying his face in Daniel’s shoulder, weeping uncontrollably. "You came back... you came back..."

"I'll always come back," Daniel whispered, his voice breaking. He looked over at Marcus, who was leaning against the doorframe, pale from blood loss. "Marcus, take my phone. Call Miller. Get the state police out here right now."

Marcus nodded weakly. "Where are you going, Danny?"

Daniel set Evan down gently, looking into his son's eyes. Then he pulled the black encrypted flash drive from his pocket and slid it into Evan's small palm.

"You stay with Marcus, Evan. The police are going to take you to your mother."

"Where are you going?" Evan cried, grabbing Daniel’s coat sleeve with both hands. "Don't go!"

Daniel looked toward the burning horizon, his eyes cold, lethal, and determined. "I'm going to end Ray."
