Chapter 17 - THE AMBUSH IN THE RAINSTORM

"What do you mean, the cloud?" Daniel gasped, staring at his ten-year-old daughter.

Lily pulled out a cracked, five-year-old pink iPod Touch—an old device Rachel had given her before she passed away.

"Officer Ramirez taught me how to use automatic backup when he gave me the notebook," Lily explained, her voice steady, remarkably calm amid the chaos. "Before Vanessa took Noah from the hospital clinic five years ago, Mom called me on this iPod. She recorded a video message for me and Dad from her hospital bed. She knew she was dying, and she knew what Richard was trying to do. She hid the digital file in her private email account. Vanessa stole the paper diary from our house tonight... but she didn't know Mom sent the video to me."

Margaret rushed to the table, her eyes wide. "Lily... Rachel recorded the birth? She recorded the switch?"

"She recorded Dr. Sterling bringing the other baby into her room," Lily said, her lower lip trembling slightly. "Mom refused to sign the adoption papers. Sterling took Noah away while Mom was crying, and Richard stood in the corner of the video holding a contract."

Daniel grabbed his laptop from his work bag, his hands moving with lightning speed. "If we have that video, Richard’s custody claim isn't just invalid—it’s evidence in an active federal kidnapping conspiracy! We don't wait for the morning hearing. We take this straight to the Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in Milwaukee right now!"

Within ten minutes, the farmhouse was locked down. Noah was bundled in three layers of blankets, carried out to Daniel’s truck in Margaret's arms. The rain had turned into a torrential downpour, blinding sheets of water hammering against the windshield as Daniel threw the heavy pickup into four-wheel drive and roared down the gravel driveway.

Ramirez was already coordinating with federal prosecutors forty miles away, promising to meet them at the interstate interchange with two marked tactical units.

The back roads leading toward Highway 41 were pitch-black, carved through dense thickets of pine and steep drainage ditches. The windshield wipers slammed back and forth in a frantic, screeching rhythm against the deluge.

"Keep your seatbelts tight, kids," Daniel said, his eyes scanning the narrow ribbon of asphalt illuminated by his high beams.

In the back seat, Lily held Noah’s hand tightly. "I'm here, Noah. I'm right here. Don't let go."

"Lily, look at the big lights!" Noah pointed through the rear window.

Daniel’s eyes flicked to the rearview mirror.

Two blinding halogen high beams had just appeared around the bend behind them, closing the distance at terrifying speed. It was a massive, black heavy-duty SUV, its engine screaming as it accelerated down the slick, rain-soaked descent.

"Hang on!" Daniel shouted, slamming his foot down on the gas.

The truck surged forward, its tires fighting for traction on the slick mud and asphalt. But the black SUV was faster, heavier, engineered for pursuit. Within seconds, its steel-reinforced front bumper was inches from Daniel’s tailgate.

*CRASH!*

The impact violently jolted the truck forward. Noah screamed. Margaret’s head snapped against the headrest.

"They're trying to pit-maneuver us!" Daniel yelled, wrestling the wheel as the truck fishtailed dangerously toward the sheer ditch on the right.

Through the pouring rain, Daniel saw the driver of the SUV pull alongside them into the opposing lane. The tinted window lowered. Sitting in the passenger seat was Richard Vance, holding a high-intensity spotlight aimed directly into Daniel’s eyes, blinding him instantly.

And behind the wheel of the pursuit SUV, her face illuminated by the green glow of the dashboard, her eyes wide with psychotic, triumphant malice, was Vanessa.

She had escaped custody three hours ahead of schedule.

"DANIEL, LOOK OUT!" Margaret shrieked.

Vanessa wrenched her steering wheel hard to the right, slamming two tons of reinforced steel directly into the side of Daniel’s truck. The truck spun violently, blew both passenger-side tires on the concrete culvert, and careened off the embankment, rolling twice through the splintering pine trees before crashing to a violent, crushing halt upside down in the mud.
