Chapter 3 - TWENTY-THREE VIDEOS

Morning arrived without feeling like morning.Daniel had not slept.

The hospital discharged Ethan shortly after two o’clock, but Daniel refused to return immediately to the house. Instead, he took both children to his sister Rachel’s home across town.

Rachel opened the door wearing pajamas and fear.

She had received only one text.

Something happened. We need somewhere safe.

The moment she saw Ethan’s cheek, she stopped asking questions.

“Come inside.”

Rachel had no children of her own, but she transformed her guest room within minutes.

Fresh blankets.

Nightlights.

Water.

A stuffed bear Lily remembered from Christmas.

Daniel watched her work and realized how different care looked when nobody demanded gratitude for it.

Ethan still would not sleep alone.

Daniel sat beside him until sunrise.

At six-thirty, Ethan finally drifted off.

His hand remained wrapped around Daniel’s sleeve.

Daniel stayed perfectly still.

He had spent years believing protection meant paying the mortgage, checking the locks, maintaining insurance, and making sure the children lived in a good neighborhood.

Now he understood protection could fail inside locked doors.

At eight, Officer Grant called.

“We need to interview you.”

“I’ll come.”

“We also need separate forensic interviews with the children.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“Will I be in the room?”

“No. Specialists conduct them without parents present. It protects the children and the integrity of what they say.”

Daniel disliked the idea instantly.

Then he looked at Ethan sleeping.

“This is about helping them?”

“Yes.”

“Then I’ll cooperate.”

The police station felt colder than the hospital.

Daniel sat across from Detective Nora Hayes, a child-abuse investigator with calm eyes and a stack of printed reports.

Officer Grant sat beside her.

Hayes opened a folder.

“I want to explain where we are.”

Daniel nodded.

“Vanessa was booked overnight on preliminary charges related to child endangerment and assault. The district attorney will determine final charges after reviewing evidence.”

“And Margaret?”

“She was released pending further investigation, but her phone was seized with consent after officers explained its evidentiary relevance.”

Daniel frowned.

“She gave permission?”

Hayes gave a small, humorless smile.

“Margaret believed the videos would prove Vanessa was merely disciplining Ethan.”

Daniel stared at her.

“She thought those recordings helped them?”

“People normalize behavior when they’ve justified it long enough.”

Hayes slid a photograph across the table.

It showed a screenshot from Margaret’s phone.

Ethan stood in the laundry room.

The timestamp was nine months earlier.

Daniel recognized the shirt.

His son had worn it to a school science fair.

That evening Daniel had asked why Ethan seemed distracted.

Vanessa said he was upset because he lost a video game.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Hayes waited.

“How many recordings?”

“Twenty-three directly involve Ethan.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

“Twenty-three?”

“Recorded over approximately eleven months.”

Grant added quietly, “There are also messages between Vanessa and Margaret discussing him.”

Daniel’s fingers tightened.

“What kind of messages?”

Hayes turned another page.

“Some appear to mock his reactions. Others discuss punishment.”

Daniel stared at the text.

He did not want to read it.

He read anyway.

He cried again when you left.

Make him scrub the floor.

Don’t leave marks where Daniel sees them.

The last sentence burned into his mind.

“Don’t leave marks.”

They had known.

This was not discipline that became excessive.

It was concealed deliberately.

Hayes watched Daniel carefully.

“I know this is difficult.”

“I married her.”

The words came out hollow.

“I brought her into that house.”

Hayes did not reassure him falsely.

“You’ll have time to deal with that responsibility. Right now your children need you functional.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“What did Lily tell you?”

“Her interview is later today.”

Daniel looked down.

Hayes leaned forward.

“Mr. Carter, Lily may have seen more than you know.”

“She’s six.”

“Children see a great deal.”

Daniel thought of the phone.

“How did she record those videos?”

“That is something we hope she can explain.”

The children arrived later with Rachel.

Ethan looked terrified when the specialist explained the interview.

Daniel crouched before him.

“You don’t have to protect anybody.”

Ethan’s mouth trembled.

“Will Vanessa know what I say?”

“Eventually adults may learn what happened. But she cannot come near you right now.”

“Will you be mad?”

Daniel’s heart broke all over again.

“At you?”

Ethan nodded.

“Never.”

“What if I did something bad too?”

Daniel frowned.

“What did you do?”

Ethan looked toward the floor.

“I lied to you.”

“About what?”

“When you asked if everything was okay.”

Daniel put both hands gently on Ethan’s shoulders.

“That wasn’t bad.”

“But I lied.”

“You were scared.”

Ethan began crying.

“She said you would believe her because you loved her.”

Daniel swallowed.

“She was wrong.”

“She said if I ruined your marriage, you’d send me away.”

Daniel felt rage rise again.

He forced it down.

This moment belonged to Ethan.

Not his anger.

“I will never send you away for telling me the truth.”

Ethan looked into his father’s eyes.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Ethan entered the interview room.

Daniel waited outside for nearly ninety minutes.

When Ethan emerged, he looked exhausted.

Daniel did not ask what he said.

He simply hugged him.

Lily’s interview happened next.

She walked in holding Rachel’s stuffed bear.

Forty minutes later, the specialist requested permission to speak with Daniel privately.

Rachel stayed with the children.

Inside another room, the specialist closed the door.

“Lily explained how she obtained the videos.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“She found Vanessa’s old phone in a kitchen drawer approximately four months ago.”

Daniel remembered the device.

An older model Vanessa stopped using after upgrading.

“She used it to record?”

“Yes. She said she learned how to open the camera from watching you.”

Daniel almost smiled despite everything.

Lily had always copied him.

The specialist continued.

“She would hide the phone behind objects when she sensed Vanessa becoming angry.”

Daniel stared.

A six-year-old had created a surveillance system inside his home.

“She also told us Vanessa threatened her.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“What threat?”

“She told Lily that children who spread lies can be taken away from their fathers.”

Daniel sat back.

The room seemed suddenly too small.

“And Margaret?”

“Lily described Margaret encouraging her not to become ‘difficult like Ethan.’”

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“Did they hurt Lily?”

“No physical abuse has been disclosed at this time.”

At this time.

The phrase terrified him.

“But she witnessed significant abuse toward her brother, and she believed she could be next.”

Daniel covered his face.

His children had lived like hostages.

One targeted.

One watching.

Both afraid.

The specialist waited until Daniel lowered his hands.

“There’s something important you should know.”

“What?”

“Lily repeatedly described Ethan protecting her.”

Daniel looked up.

“Protecting her how?”

“When Vanessa became angry, Ethan deliberately drew attention toward himself.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“He what?”

“He would spill something, argue, or volunteer for chores because he believed Vanessa would leave Lily alone if she focused on him.”

Daniel stared through the small observation window.

Ethan was sitting beside Lily in the hallway.

She had fallen asleep against his shoulder.

He was holding the stuffed bear in his lap for her.

Ten years old.

And he had been trying to be the adult.

Daniel left the room.

He sat beside Ethan.

“Buddy.”

Ethan looked up.

Daniel struggled to speak.

“Why didn’t you let Vanessa get angry at Lily?”

Ethan’s eyes widened.

He understood immediately.

“They told you.”

“Why?”

Ethan shrugged.

“She’s little.”

“So are you.”

Ethan stared at the floor.

“She gets scared easier.”

Daniel pulled him into an embrace.

For several seconds, Ethan remained stiff.

Then he collapsed against his father.

“I thought if she hurt me, she wouldn’t hurt Lily.”

Daniel held him tighter.

“You were never supposed to carry that.”

Ethan cried quietly.

“I didn’t know what else to do.”

Daniel whispered into his hair.

“You don’t have to do it anymore.”

That afternoon, Detective Hayes called Daniel back into the interview room.

She had another document.

“A judge issued an emergency protective order.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Vanessa cannot contact Ethan, Lily, or you directly. Margaret is also prohibited from contact with the children while the investigation continues.”

Daniel nodded.

“When can we go home?”

Hayes hesitated.

“That is your house legally.”

“Then why do you look worried?”

“Because when officers searched the kitchen for additional evidence, they found a small camera.”

Daniel froze.

“Where?”

“Above the pantry.”

“I didn’t install a camera.”

“We know.”

A technician had discovered it while documenting the kitchen.

The device pointed toward the sink and island.

Someone had been recording the family.

Daniel’s confusion turned to dread.

“Whose camera is it?”

“We’re examining the storage card.”

“Was Vanessa recording Ethan?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Hayes slid a photograph across the table.

The tiny black camera was nearly invisible against the cabinet trim.

Daniel stared at it.

The twenty-three phone videos had already revealed months of cruelty.

Now another device existed.

One nobody knew about.

May you like

Not even Lily.

And Daniel suddenly wondered whether the truth inside that house was darker than any of them had imagined.
