Chapter 6 - Shadows Under Michigan Avenue

Back at the Bellwether Grand, Mara Bennett had no intention of walking into Evelyn’s trap.

In Room 404, the countdown timer on the surveillance screen hit **00:18:42**.

Eighteen minutes.

Mara looked at Lily, who was sitting under the folding table, her knees pulled to her chest, trembling silently.

"Lily," Mara said, kneeling in front of the child, her voice steady and clear. "I need you to be the bravest girl in the world right now. Can you do that for me?"

Lily nodded slowly, her hazel eyes wide with awe and terror. "Yes, Mara."

"I am going to put you in the service dumbwaiter behind that drywall," Mara pointed to a small, brass-framed access hatch used by the construction crews to lower tools between floors. "It leads down to the basement laundry facility. It has a manual brake inside. When you get to the bottom, you stay inside the cart, under the towels, and you do not make a peep until I open that door. Do you understand?"

"Are you going to get Mommy?"

"I’m going to get your mommy," Mara promised, pressing a gentle kiss to the girl’s forehead. "And then we are going to walk out of this place together."

Mara lifted Lily into the small metal box, handed her a small flashlight, and latched the safety gate. She worked the manual cable pulley with her bare hands, feeling the steel wire bite into her palms as she lowered the dumbwaiter down the dark shaft until she felt the line go slack. The counterweight had reached the bottom. Lily was safely hidden in the sub-level laundry depot.

Now, Mara was completely untethered.

She turned back to the surveillance console. Pinned beneath the edge of the monitor keyboard was the override card: **SL-03 // OVERRIDE**. But beside it lay something even more dangerous: a printed floor schematic showing the subterranean tunnel network beneath Michigan Avenue.

The Bellwether Grand wasn't just built on ordinary ground; it sat atop the historic Chicago Freight Tunnel system—a sixty-mile network of abandoned, subterranean rail tunnels constructed in the early 1900s to haul coal beneath the Loop. Evelyn Voss hadn't just renovated a hotel; she had converted the abandoned rail depot beneath Sub-Level 3 into an off-the-books containment and logistics center.

*That’s why nobody ever heard the screams,* Mara realized with a chill. *They aren't just in a basement. They’re forty feet beneath the Chicago River.*

Mara grabbed a heavy crowbar from the construction tool chest in the corner, slipped a box-cutter into her pocket, and took the override card.

She didn't use the stairs. She didn't use the elevators.

Mara climbed onto the utility staging platform, removed the metal ventilation grate over the central laundry exhaust chute, and slid feet-first into the vertical darkness.

The descent was a bone-jarring blur of galvanized steel, dust, and friction. Mara used her elbows and the heels of her boots to brake against the sides of the chute, the sheet metal screeching under the impact. She dropped three floors in six seconds, bursting through the lower exhaust flap and landing hard on a massive mountain of dirty hotel linens inside the subterranean laundry facility.

She rolled to her feet instantly, the crowbar raised, her senses dialed to maximum.

The laundry room was cavernous, illuminated only by the dull amber glow of emergency exit lights. The air was thick, hot, and smelled of industrial bleach and scorching metal. In the corner, the dumbwaiter sat motionless. Mara crept over, peered through the brass mesh, and saw Lily curled beneath a bundle of white sheets, her eyes peeking out, silent as a ghost.

Mara tapped the mesh twice: *Stay put.*

Lily gave a tiny nod.

Mara turned toward the heavy, reinforced steel door at the back of the facility. Above the reinforced frame was a weathered stencil: **SL-03: THERMAL UTILITY / RESTRICTED ENTRY**.

Beside the door was a magnetic card reader glowing red.

Mara stepped forward, holding her breath, and swiped the black card.

The reader beeped once. A sharp, mechanical click echoed through the corridor as the magnetic locks disengaged. The LED light turned from crimson to a brilliant, emerald green.

The countdown on Mara's wristwatch showed **00:11:05**.

Eleven minutes until midnight.

Mara took a deep breath, gripped the iron crowbar with white-knuckled fury, pulled the heavy steel door open, and stepped into the abyss.
