Chapter 31 - The Law of the Corrupt

"You murdered Nora," Gabriel said, his voice flat, dead, devoid of all fear.
A chilling pause stretched over the line.
"Nora was an ungrateful nuisance," Marlene replied, her tone sharpening like a razor. "I gave her a home, an elite family name, and access to circles she could never have dreamed of. And how did she repay me? By snooping into private family financial matters. She forced my hand, Gabriel. Just as you are doing now."
"The police have the ledgers. They have the bank statements."
"Those ledgers show simple administrative disputes, Gabriel. My lawyers have already filed motions to suppress. But *you*? You took Amelia from a designated safe environment. You assaulted two security personnel at the marina. Arthur’s friends in the State Police have already issued an Amber Alert with your name and photo."
Gabriel looked at Amelia. Her small face was illuminated by the pale blue glow of his phone. She was watching him, her eyes wide, full of questions she was too terrified to ask.
"What do you want, Marlene?"
"Locker 714," Marlene said smoothly. "Bring the dossier and the key to the estate. Give them to Arthur. Sign the full guardianship transfer over to me. You walk away with five million dollars in offshore bonds, and you start a new life. In South America. In Europe. Anywhere far away from here."
"And Amelia?"
"Amelia will be sent to a prestigious boarding school in Gstaad. Where she will be properly disciplined, properly educated, and kept away from common influences. She will want for nothing. And when she turns eighteen, she will sign over the remainder of the Sterling trust to the Vance foundation, just as it was meant to be."
"You made her eat off the floor, Marlene! You starved her! You treated her like dirt beneath your shoes!" Gabriel roared, unable to contain the white-hot rage tearing through his soul.
"She needed to learn humility!" Marlene snapped, her aristocratic facade cracking into pure, unhinged malice. "She has her mother’s stubborn, filthy blood! Every time I looked at her, I saw Julianna! I saw Nora! She was lucky I allowed her to sleep under my roof at all!"
Amelia flinched, hearing Marlene’s screeching voice through the speaker. Tears spilled silently down her cheeks.
Gabriel stared at the phone. His hand tightened until the screen creaked.
"Listen to me very carefully, Marlene," Gabriel whispered, every syllable laced with lethal certainty. "I am not taking your money. I am not giving you Amelia. I am coming to the estate. But I won't be coming to negotiate. I am coming to bury you."

He hung up the phone and smashed it against the wooden floorboards with his boot.
